EDDIE VAN HALEN Speaks Out: 'The Best Is Yet To Come'

With a 42-city tour kicking off June 11 and a brand new album, "The Best of Both Worlds" set to hit stores on July 20, VAN HALEN guitarist Eddie Van Halen is a busy man. In a true world exclusive and his first major interview in five years, the rock and roll god talks exclusively to Guitar World about his battle with cancer and the triumphant return of his band.

Here are some excerpts from his revealing interview in Guitar World:

On the last six years out of the spotlight: "Well, a lot happened to me. I had hip-replacement surgery, I beat cancer and my marriage ended. Those were all important and difficult events, and I needed time to deal with them. There was nothing really mysterious about any of it, but all three of those things were extremely personal, and I didn't feel the need to share them with the public. But I never stopped making music. I worked through them, and I discovered there was a light at the end of the tunnel. And it wasn't an oncoming train. It changed my life forever. I'm back, I'm black and I'm chasing young white meat! [laughs] There is nothing that can keep me down. Whatever stands before me I will deal with."

On beating cancer: "I kicked the shit out of cancer. It never occurred to me that I would die. I figured whatever comes in can also get the fuck out. And it did. I'm not in remission-the cancer is gone."

On VAN HALEN, the band: "There is a huge misconception about this band and that is without my brother, Alex Van Halen, who is the key, [the band] would not be. He is and has been there for me since before I was born…Without me, there also is no VAN HALEN, because it starts with me. We are not a rock band. We are a rock and roll band."

On what brought Sammy Hagar back to the band: "He called, we had a couple of good conversations and he was back in. It was as simple as that. Usually when bands break up and get back together, things are never quite the same. But I think there's a chance that this will work out because we're communicating a lot better. For example, there was some tension a few days ago. Sam said a few things I didn't like, but we ended up talking about it and cleared it up. That's the way it's supposed to work. I gave him a hug and kiss today and told him that I loved him."

On growing up Van Halen: "The whole time I was growing up, my mom used to call me a 'nothing nut, just like your father.' When you grow up that way, it's not conducive for self-esteem."

On disciplining his 13-year-old son: "I don't believe in punishment. I rarely tell him, 'Don't do this.' I'd rather try to make him think about the consequences of his actions and allow him to make his own decisions. For example, if he talks back to me, I'll tell him, 'If you treat someone else the way you're treating me, you'll get your ass kicked.' He once asked, 'What’s that like?' And I responded, 'You’ll see.' That's how you learn. Either listen or learn the hard way, but you will learn."

On power: "I've been in therapy for over 13 years, and my therapist keeps telling me, 'Focus on yourself, focus on yourself, focus on yourself.' Now, when I go onstage, if people start chanting, 'Eddie, Eddie, Eddie,' like they have in the past, I'm not going to try to silence them because the lead singer doesn't dig it. Instead I'm going to say, 'Thank you.' That's called owning your power — it's not abusing it."

On recording the forthcoming "The Best of Both Worlds": "Throughout my career, I've relied on someone else to record my sound, and I can't say that I've ever been really happy with the end result. I never really understood why no one could capture the sounds I make on tape, but I never complained because professional engineers always intimidated me. Now I'm doing it myself, and I think I'm getting pretty close."

When asked what his choices would be for a VAN HALEN greatest-hits album: "I don't know, because I feel the best is yet to come. The new songs are just an ice cube not even the tip of an iceberg of what is to come."

Eddie doesn't do good interviews, does he?

On VAN HALEN, the band: "There is a huge misconception about this band and that is without my brother, Alex Van Halen, who is the key, [the band] would not be. Does this make any sense at all? He says they aren't a rock band, but they are a rock 'n roll band? Isn't that the same fuckin' thing? Van Halen wouldn't be Van Halen without his brother Alex (the key), but then without himself (the key) it wouldn't be Van Halen? Well, no shit sherlock!

Ed sounds so confused. He even thinks he's black now.

Ed, has "never been happy with my sound".
Now he engineers himself and his sound is getting "close".

Ed is not only drunk, he is also going deaf!!

WB should've hired Sambo for half of the shows, and hired Roth for the other half. That way they would decide who the singer should be. That also would prove shit face hagar how small he is next to Roth!
If that wouldn't open his eyes then...........

Oh, is that so Ed? If that is what you honestly believe then fucking retire already cos the new songs are not the "tip" of anything. Infact they are such bottom feeders that they are lower than whaleshit.

I wonder if Edward really believes this shit when he says it? Too many fried brain cells IMO.

I think this is a good interview. I don't think Ed sounds as wacked out as he appeared to be in the rehearsal footage. There is the positive aspect that he's back and whatever is before him he will face it. (maybe Spam is easier to deal with to get him broke in again, then Dave can take over and we'll get some good shit.) Dave thinking he's black must have rubbed off.

On the band. I am surprised he didn't mention Mikey. But the band is 25% each of four members-and I can see where this is a defensive point for him.

Also what he says about thinking the best is yet to come-and letting other people engineering his recordings for him. Though I agree that the three new songs are not exactly par for what I expect from EVH, it could explain some of the conflict that you hear in the music, and hopefully any future music will be "smoothed out". I still think the track these songs are taking could evolve into something dooable.

And finally the comment about we are not a Rock band but a Rock and Roll band. I believe Ed is justifying his acceptance of "ballads" etc., and saying he does not want to get stuck in one hard and fast genre of music. I am glad. Classic Van Halen had some good tunes that never got produced because they did not "fit in" on the album. It may be hard for some die hard rock fans to accept, but I like a little variety and hope to hear more of it.

Okay, yeah its gross that he kissed Spam and said he loved him. But WTF an artist can be eccentric. Besides if he can kiss Spam and say I love you, surely he can shake hands and say "Dave, welcome back."

The early stages of this "tour" will prove most interesting, I have no doubt.

Now, that I really resent, Max!!!

Those new songs ARE the tip of something! They are the tip of a nice, long piece of brown/green shit sitting on the edge of the toilet bowl, water lapping next to them and whispering the lyrics to UP FOR BREAKFAST.

New VAN HALEN. A friend of mine (who hates VAN HALEN, always has) called me up yesterday to tell me how much the new VAN HALEN song sucks, basically rubbing it in my face to prove to me how bad the band is. The sad thing is, I couldn't really defend myself. He was right, and the only thing I could say was, "This isn't the same band I'm preaching to you, man."

Uh, okay there Ed. Sorry my friend, but Robert Goulet is blacker than you right now. Have you listened to your latest single, Ed? It's whiter than WONDER BREAD lying on a beach in Florida on a sunny day. The song sucks, Ed. Robert Johnson would hear it and say, "Brother, what happened to the blues?"

Kick that Spammy Gaygar out of your little "rock 'n' roll" outfit and get back the greatest white blues singer this side of Pasadena. I think my friend Blind Willie Loons would agree with that, she bop ze bop!

It's not the same band Rikk. Tell him it's Van Hagar, the bastard step-child of the real band, Van Halen.

                              Hey Rikk,

Do they actually play the shit song on the radio up there? It's only on one radio's playlist here and it was only on their top twenty request list the first day. I've only heard it played once and that was about a week ago. I have heard that it's been played about three other times though from other people.

As for the other two, I've never even heard them mentioned here.
