Are you serious? Did you actually watch any of the videos in this post? FAN HALEN is a joke! Who cares if those guys went out and got some costumes and guitars that look good, they can't play or sing. Really listen to the audio on those videos. Terrible, very average at best. Spanish Fly? Why were they even mentioned?
I saw The Atomic Punks and 5150 at the House of Blues show in Hollywood this past friday night. They haven't lost anything with the new singer Ricky. It was just as kick ass of a Van Halen show as the band has always put on. There were actually things I liked better about it than Punks shows that I have seen in the past (about 20 going back to the FM Station days). Most of all, there was less general talking and joking around, it was more like an actual Van Halen show than the show had turned into with Ralph over the last couple years. Last time I saw the Punks was back at the Whiskey in 2007, so I had to go see them with the new singer. Not only did he nail all of the DLR stuff, he's a really nice guy. Was lucky enough to talk to him for a little while after the show. Asked him the generic questions about how he got the gig and met the guys, he was so cool to spend time talking to me. Guess he was in an east coast VH Tribute and the Punks saw a YouTube video and contacted him, cool story. He also talked about filling in with other VH tributes and did mention that he had played a few shows filling in with Fan Halen. But he didn't have anything good to say about those guys, something about the guitar player runs the band and that he talked a bunch of shit about their lead singer and his wife the whole time, so Ricky didn't like his vibe and the band was no good. Funny how that worked out for him, Ralph quits and now he's kickin ass in the Punks.
Good for them, the House of Blues was much better than the video from the OC Tavern. Trust me, a huge, long-time Van Halen (and A.Punks) fan, the show is just as good as it ever was and these guys are definitely still kicking major ass!! I wouldn't waste a penny going to see those other bands.
And 5150? Incredible! I'm definitely more of a DLR guy, but I like the Sammy-era too. I'm not surprised that the guys in the band nailed the music, but holy shit, the singer Mark absolutely killed those vocals. Very impressed! Funny, who else to do the best tributes to both versions of Van Halen than these guys.
VH forever!
