Van Cherone vs Van ReHash Tour

As I stated when I rejoined this fine Roth Army, I have not followed Van Halen much since the early 90's; having followed VH since '77 when I saw them live. I followed Diamond obviously, and somethings would read articles on Eddie in the 90's, but that was it. I never read or heard anything from the Van Cherone years.

Several members here, posted that Cherone sang better than Hagar, and not even Cherone butchered Van Roth classic songs like Hagar is currently. Accordingly, over the weekend I listened to some audios and briefly watch some videos of the Van Cherone era concerts. I must disagree with some of the RA members quasi-positive comments on Cherone. Based on my review, that had to be some of the worst fronting and singing I have ever seen or heard.

God, Cherone was just horrible, and him trying to mimic Roth's vocal moves on the classic's was well......I've heard cats f--k that sounded better. Even Hagar is not that stupid to try and mimick Roth's vocals moves! Geeeeeee

I posted this on another thread a while back, but I will post it again here. I have never heard ANYONE that can sing Roth's VH - I songs. This isn't a BS pro-Roth statement. I'm just stating that only Roth's voice works with most classic VH - I songs.

Dave just has one of those very unique voices and gifts, like Steven Tyler, or Freddie Mercury (RIP). I've never heard anyone do justice on Tyler's-Arrowsmith's or Mercury-Queen's classic songs either. Simple reason - It's impossible to replicate these three legends. That's why they have that unique status in rock history among all serious pros!

    ---

Another thing on listening/watching the Van Cherone 98 Tour this weekend:

I am totally shocked how much Eddie's ability has deteriorated, since the 1998 Van Cherone Tour. The guy was still damn good in 98, and had most of his early years ability and sound. Currently, EVH has easily lost 65-75% of his guitar playing ability, based on watching various portions of the 5 videos I have of the current Van ReHash Tour.

Oh yeah, if you're Eddie Van Halen you can lose a lot of ability and still be damn good. And, yes in these Van ReHash Tour videos, EVH has several moments on-stage that he is pure classic Eddie. But, the rest of the time he is a boozing/druggin hack up there.

And you know, I get sick of hearing, "well you know EVH had cancer" and that is the reason for his loss of ability and current appearance. That is such total uneducated bull shit! EVH's cancer was like he had a snotty nose compared to the cancer I went through, and many other 100,000's of people endure annually in the U.S.

EVH had a localized non-metastized form cancer. Thousands of people, everyday, have this form of cancer with no effect on their overall lives and productive capacity. For Eddie, it's a reason to drug, smoke, booze himself to death, and shit on everyone around him!

Maybe the pussy will get full-blown systemic metastized cancer when he gets it again, and he WILL get cancer again. Then I might cut the worthless loser a little bit of slack!

Roth beat out Hagar? That's too obvious.

But Hagar beating out Brian Johnson, Joe Elliott, Geoff Tate, Geddy Lee, Rod Stewart, Bono, Klaus Meine, Bret Michaels and Vince Neil???

Where's Mick Jagger, Larry Gowan, Marq Torien or Gary Cherone.

When I first heard "Without You", thought it was a Van Hagar demo. Cherone's voice sounds a lot like Hagar's. The songs on the Van Halen 3 tour that came off the best from a vocal standpoint were the Van Hagar ones. Agree totally that Dave has a unique voice that neither Sam nor Gary could pull off or mimick well.

Both the Van Cherone and the current tour are basically misfires by Van Halen. Two missed opportunities by EVH to be working with the frontman who complimented him and the band the best.

Roth bailed in 1985. Fine. Since 1996, when Roth could have back in the band and they could have been creating music pursuant along the lines of MWM and CGTSNM (which, lyrically and intrumentally, are more interesting than anything VH's come up with since 1985) and touring, EVH's just been wasting time.
          Scramby eggs and bacon.

I really don't see what makes Cherone so terrible. I listened to a bootleg today and he is one hell of a singer.

Gary Cherone is a great singer. The problem is that when he was in VH, EVH would not let him sing like Gary Cherone. Instead, he made him try and sing like Sammy, which made him sound like shit. Go listen to pretty much any Extreme disc, especillay 3 sides to a story or Waiting for the Punchline. After all, EVH seemed to be trying to replicate those two discs on VH3

cherone sounded better in extreme than he did with VH...his work on 3 Sides is really good but he blew out his voice on one of the latter albums, having surgery i believe which led to him sounding more "gravelly".

and no, no would could sing like DLR, cause he couldnt really sing in a traditional sense. he had a style to him that you just match.

At least Cherone had to guts to respect the vocals on the Classic VH tracks, and include them in the concert, and not dismiss them the way Spam Halen has.
