Eddie Van Halen Denies Firing Michael Anthony
    Posted By: Angela Spears

NEW YORK (AP) -- Eddie Van Halen denies firing Michael Anthony so his son could be Van Halen's bass player.

Van Halen tells Rolling Stone, "Everyone who quits the band always claims they got fired by me." He says when Sammy Hagar left, Anthony went with him. When David Lee Roth returned, Van Halen says Anthony wanted back in, but he told him, "No, dude, you quit the band."

Van Halen says his son Wolfgang was around and they didn't have a bass player, so he asked Wolfgang to do it.

Incidentally, I'd love to know what constituted "the band" when Mike "left." I think Ed is still sort of a dick and as Zah says well - a pathological tool.

It's funny how in the real world we always say, I didn't get fired, I quit. Yet in the wonderful and crazy world of RnR, it's just the opposite. Quite bizarre.

Former VAN HALEN bassist Michael Anthony has disputed guitarist Eddie Van Halen's assertion that Anthony quit the band before being replaced by Eddie's son Wolfgang.

In a recent interview with RollingStone.com, Eddie Van Halen was asked if he had heard CHICKENFOOT, which in addition to Anthony, includes former VAN HALEN singer Sammy Hagar.

"I'm too busy doing my own thing," Van Halen said, who then added, "The funny thing is that everyone who quits the band always claims they got fired by me. Hey, I'm not the bad guy here.

"When Hagar left the band, Mike went with him," Van Halen continued. "Then when we get back together with Dave [Lee Roth], and all of a sudden, he wants back in. It's like, 'No, dude, you quit the band.' So my son became the bass player. But we didn't give Mike the boot to have my son play."

Michael Anthony, speaking to MusicRadar.com, challenged Van Halen's version of events. "Why would I have quit VAN HALEN? It never happened," he said. "And what's weird is, he was being asked about CHICKENFOOT, whether he had heard us or not, and suddenly he launches into this thing about me quitting the group. What does one thing even have to do with the other?"

"I never 'quit.' I never once said, 'I'm out of here.' It never happened. That's the weird thing right now, for Eddie to be trying to paint himself as 'not the bad guy.'"

"Ultimately, all's well that ends well," he said. "I just find it odd that I'm put into a situation where I'm forced to defend myself. Everything is great in my world and I couldn't be happier with the group I'm in. But I don't want people to think I quit VAN HALEN, because I didn't. It never happened."

          What Mike says is correct.

He never said openly to Ed and Al "I'm outta here" as Dave did in '85.

However, let's be honest Mike, you sure didn't communicate with Eddie or Alex either after the 2004 tour ended (not that Eddie was ever in a state to be communicated with).

So, yeah, you never said to Ed "I quit!" but you really never said anything either. But YOU DID decide to continue with Sam post 2005. I mean, doesn't billing yourself and Hagar as "the other half" project a negative message to Eddie in itself?

I also seem to recall Mike expressing with Sam in a post-2004 tour interview just how destructive Ed was on the tour, etc, etc. All true of course but certainly not encouraging words to suggest you still wanted to be part of Van Halen.

So, in reality Mike didn't quit VH but he certainly didn't try to maintain a relationship with them either.

In contrast, Dave did what Mike didn't do -- which was COMMUNICATE. As early as January 2006, when he began his short-lived radio career, Dave made mention of contacting Alex to see where things were at, etc. And, as we know, Dave continued to stay in touch. Fact is, Mike didn't. Therein lies the difference and where things are at now.

This quarrel is pathetic. Who really cares who left whom? Mike is out of the band and that's the only axiom. I'm not even sure he'll be out forever.

It states on wikipedia, the famous quote, from Ed that shocked and outraged Van Halen fans.

In reference to Hill Billie Anthony, Ed mocked his Two Faced disposition, when he scoffed "you can`t be in two bands". LMAO!

He also mocked the Two Faced pig`s personna, by saying on Howard Stern," Mr S can do what he likes now".

              LOL!

Ed and Al will never allow that pig, back in the band, because he and Hagar, taunted them, by not attending their mother`s funeral.

              Goodbye, Mike.

I think Dave said it best in his book CFTH about Ed; something to the effect that some people suffer from "selective memory".

Hey, I would never trust an alcoholic's memory. Especially one who is in his 50s.

Exactly. In all fairness to Ed, I believe this was tantamount to quiting the band in Ed's eyes. So when Wolf comes to him and shows interest in classic VH, it is a no brainer that Wolf would be a part of the reunion. To bad Ed can't seem to articulate his point of view a little better.

Swore I wouldn't get invoved in this useless argument...

Never say never. I didn't think I'd live to see the day DLR was back in the band. I didn't think I'd live long enough to see Ace Frehley and Peter Criss back with KISS. I sure wouldn't have won the bet if Cherone were ever to have been asked to join VH. Mike could very well possibly return to join VH in the next year or two.

Yeah, Wolfie will quit the greatest rock band of all time, so the Fat Pig can take his place! Do you really think Wolf will turn down the chance to make a new album/tour with Dave?

Eddie had some issues with Mike going back to the Fair Warning days, if not before then. Losing David Lee Roth in 1985 was the worst thing that ever happened to Van Halen, but it was probably the best thing that could happen to Sobolewski, because he became Hagar's buddy and made it 2 against 2 as long as Van Hagar was together.

But then his friendship with the Ched Rocker also proved to be Mikey's downfall, because he DID leave the band (and work on all of Spammy's little "side projects") when Hagar did.

So they're both to blame. Not gonna say that part of me wouldn't like to see Mikey up there on stage with the band in 2010, but I'm not holding my breath that it would ever happen then, or any other time in the future (assuming Eddie & Alex live long enough that Van Halen stays together for any length of time)

                              Wait!

Explain to me what "BAND" Michael left...

Drunken Edward and his curiously strange neck braced brother ??

Your correct about the problems going way back to at least 1981 if I remember correctly. I read an interview where Edward accused Michael of not being that interested in making a "good album" following the release of Fair Warning, and in my opinion, that album has the best bass of all. Ed also complained about the bass on WACF and that he couldn't hear Michael live...

                              It's all bullshit!

I personally feel Edward was Jealous of Michael probably for having the most stable personality in the band...

AND Michael IS an awesome bass player...the live material, what there is, prooves it...
