Maybe if Ed has his own brand of wireless he would use the fucking thing and roam about the stage like he once did many moons ago.
The evh wireless system!!!

Seeing him plugged in and working his foot pedals does stand out to me when I watch the clips. Don't normally see that in huge arena shows, but more small club shows. But maybe the gear junkies here can explain a little better. Don't you lose something with wireless sound/tone wise compared to hard wired?“Great losses often bring only a numb shock. To truly plunge a victim into misery, you must overwhelm him with many small sufferings.” -
Depends on who you talk to...
There's two schools of thought about it: one says your tone is actually better since it's not going through a ton of cable before hitting your amp's input; some say the cable is part of the sound you're used to hearing and so is therefore not quite "kosher" without it.
I always liked the freedom of wireless systems, but something about the transmitter/receiver deal DOES alter your tone a bit, IMO....
Just my .02....

Actually, there are 2 kinds of wireless: analogue and digital.
The digital that works best, Spectrasonics, is high-end stuff and crystal-clear. However, it gives guitar high frequencies at the top end a bit of a harshness on the ear I don't care for.
The analogue wireless systems as EVH had back in the day, is quite different from both corded signal and digital because included in the transmitter-receiver are a set of companders that add a touch of compression that is very desireable for overdriving tube amps so much that its not uncommon to utilize the wireless system while recording.. even though the amp in the studio is 3 feet away from you.
Compared to corded signal going to pedals, wireless is a little warmer sounding actually because of the extra drive. However, this added warmth in the low end range comes at a cost to the highs.
A compander is a compression/expander chip, usually the NE570 began by National Semiconductor but now everyone makes a generic.

Although I recall Ed having a long cable between the reciever and the amp...
Just to compensate for the extra treble. Why settle for something you have, if it's not as good as something you're out to get?

I know Sony custom made a unit for Ed. He wore the transmitter on a belt around his waist and before that he had the transmitters on his guitar straps. No! You can't have the keys to the wine cellar!Comment

Yep there's also a few microsecond delay introduced in the signal chain that's not there running direct via cable. Hardly noticable to most but can muck with timing... a bit, especially in certain songs that require a real tight sync with drums and/or bass.
You learn to compensate for it... but I've seen it throw people off."If you want to be a monk... you gotta cook a lot of rice...”Comment

The problem with a wired setup is that its incompatible with the modern stage setup. You get these ramps or catwalks or whatever the hell you want to call them, and Dave can walk out on these things into the crowd, but Eddie can't because he's anchored to the stage.
Contrast this with U2's current "360" stage setup where they have this catwalk circling the whole stage and a couple of bridges between the two. You have the whole band walking around the stage - yeah, even Larry gets a few minutes on one of the new songs where he walks around with a bongo for the first half of the song. Edge and Adam are frequently out on the catwalk with their wireless setups and Bono, of course with a wireless mic.
The Stones have done similar setups on their recent tours. If they can pull this off, so can Van Halen.Eat Us And Smile

My brother in law is an organist. In the mid 80's I was with him in Salt Lake City and he had some connections with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and we went to see them practice in the old tabernacle that has the famous organ. After practice he got to try the organ out and it was throwing him for a loop because there was a huge delay between hitting the key and air coming out of the pipes. That organ was loud as hell too with the place empty. It really was like being in front of a big PA system. LOL!No! You can't have the keys to the wine cellar!Comment

It would be weird to be on a big stage. I'm used to being so close to the drummer the cymbals hammer my right ear to where that's worse than being blasted by the amps. No! You can't have the keys to the wine cellar!Comment
