To be quite frank with you, I doubt he's used them AT ALL on the classic albums.

Setting aside the recollections of Dave Roth and Mike Anthony (who both claim the footage is incomplete) because after all, there is a good chance that they were so buzzed as to not have a clear idea about details, look at what little evidence there is.

The three videos (“Unchained,” “Hear About it Later” and “So This Is Love”) officially released are made up of a series of at times bizarre and incongruous cuts. In "Unchained", Ed Van Halen uses two different guitars during the performance of the tune. Now if the guys putting this together had to resort to such trickery in order to produce a mere three videos, what are the chances of an entire show sitting around someplace? Even Anthony's bass tech Kevin Dugan (who was around at the time) doubts the footage is complete.

It's also odd that none of this alleged footage has showed up anywhere. Think about how many people have been through the revolving door of VH employment. By now at least some traces of the footage should have appeared in bootleg form. And even if there was enough film to warrant some sort of release in abridged form, the production was co-financed by Warner Brothers and Van Halen, meaning Ed would now have to split the profits with Warners, a label that dropped him. How do you think that would work out?

OK! Rumored that Noel Monk had a pro-shot video of every tour 1978-1984! Maybe warner bros. owns the rights and won't release to Edwardo! Anyone? Thoughts on this!

The next tour might see the light of day on dvd. No Mike, Ed will probably play better with his hand fixed. And Mike wouldn't be on it !!(did I mention that already ?) Plus new material also, Van Halen isn't an oldie's act, just ask Ed !! Wonder if Dave will be there. His silence while sad is a good sign I guess !!

Yes, well, Jimmy Page being a "recovering" pedophile warlock junike didn't stop him from raiding the vaults, so a "recovering" methhead alkie doesn't really have an excuse, eh?

Think the difference between the two bands is Zep split due to a death. How long they theoretically might have lasted if Bonham had survived is open to debate. I never got the sense that Plant felt there was much in the way of unfinished business with Led Zeppelin when Bonham passed. His attitude seemed to have been "well, whatever the future may have held for the band is over now, and always will be." Page feels differently, but when the 2003 dvd release happened, it wasn't like it was going to threaten some active future Led Zeppelin had as a touring or recording unit. Plant isn't going to "reform" Led Zeppelin.

With Van Halen, the band split due to ego and personality clashes. I always felt perhaps a bit too soon (am not sure if I wanted more material along the lines of Jump or I'll Wait, though). With the brief reformation in 1996, the result was such that maybe the band DID have a reason for reforming beyond simply the money. With Van Halen now ostensibly still moving forward, even if it's only live work, I suppose I can see where some (maybe all) of the members of the current Van Halen lineup wouldn't want a CVH live release out there showing the band in their slamming, take-no-prisoners prime. As good as some of the 2007-2008 dates may have been, they were nowhere NEAR CVH at their best live.

I've dug it up a few times... I think it's over at VHvaults or VHclassic web site. There's an inventory listing with hours and hours of LIVE audio & video in various formats that was stored at Pacific Archives or something to that effect. This is the place that stores tons of Hollywood movies and master copies of audio, video, etc... in climate controlled vaults in Southern California...

The band and crew may not remember what was kept and stored. I'm sure their management team handled all that... while they were busy being rock gods...

Good post Terry, that makes total sense, and may be exactly why VH hasn't released any classic material. I would love to have a polished version of the US festival in surround.

I don't think we'll see any of that stuff for VH like what Zeppelin released in 2003.

Would be nice but Ed would release a new pedal or more guitar gear than past vids of old VH footage.

Why? Because he is a cunt.

                            So is his brother.

And if Al had any sense left in his cranium he's realize what his favorite band has done with their vaults and do the same thing.

                            But no.

That's right. I remember seeing all of this in a list.

I bet Pete Angelus (Dave's old business partner and former VH lighting guy) would know.
