There was electricity in the air when these guys walked on that stage. It was like the planets lined up and all was right with the world. Kiss was in the middle of their reunion tour, Nisson released a kickass commercial with YRGM BLASTING in the background. MTV was playing a promo commercial to promote the reunion and then like a puff of smoke it was all over. It felt like someone punched me in the stomach while I wasn't looking. This is a period in VH history I would rather forget.

Without Dave they'd have broken up and gone back to college, or become a two-album SoCal Garage act that had a WB deal "back in the seventies", then gone on to a career in something like used auto sales.

I pretty much agree with this, especially the first part. Booze was so crucial to who Eddie Van Halen was that without it, it's bound to change his playing and attitude. I like the idea that Ed and Dave were able to put their differences aside in 2007-08, but I don't think it can ever be the same again.

Anybody hear Ed's infamous interview with Howard Stern? He said he preferred Clapton when Clapton was a heroin addict. 'fraid to say the same about Ed - I think he needed the booze and the demons. The problem is that you can't do that your whole life.

I think it's over. They could make another album, but it won't be VH unless it is about not giving a fuck. They grew up - that's the problem.

Ed said in the interview, if they were to get back together with Roth for a tour, they would have to record a new album first. Has this man ever, and I mean ever, done, or followed through with anything he has said? Thats how I know in Daves book CFTH that he is telling the truth. Dave said he was ready to go, do an album, go on tour but Ed was saying baby steps. Ed and Al knew all along that they were just using Dave to sell the Best of album. THey very easily could have told Dave up front and NOT led him on. I think the lyrics in Me Wise Magic and CGTSNM say it all. They went right over Ed's head.

my point being that with ANY kind of drug or alcohol there are up's and then the inevitable down. This was Ed's down. He had morphed into ugly evil Ed filled with anger and hate and self-esteem issues. Esp. Al. The deep drag on that smoke is so "chest puffed out" better than you attitude and that's another thing that coming down from coke does.

Just saying its AN excuse. not THE excuse IF there is even any excuse for why the 96 reunion didn't work.

I think when Ed said it was "inappropriate that Dave was dancing, disrespecting "Beck" I immediately knew Ed was brain-dead or lying thru his teeth and that Dave was right. They used him to get higher record sales, that Dave had to end up suing over...sad...that's another BS thing they did to him...

#1 I remember a time when ALL members of Van Halen DISRESPECTED ALL OTHER BANDS.
