Cos i bet he does not want to spend money on a outside producer.

I think he may just have another meltdown under the pressure.

Remember those last songs he produced on that 'best of' Hmmm...

Do you think he can pull it off successfully?
. . . will dave permit eddie to produce?

. . . don't forget, dave's an accomplished producer in his own right. he produced dlr band (brilliance) and diamond dave and didn't he produce skyscraper as well?

. . . glen ballard is the obvious choice for the new project . . .

Well, in the event that there is an album, the obvious choice for a producer is Ted Templeman.

He's too old? So what? When EMI/Capitol wants to put out another Beatles release, they don't fuck around, they drag George Martin's fossilized ass into the building and get it done. Made the mistake with another producer (Spector) back in 1970, they never did so again.

If Templeman is physically incapable of sitting behind the glass, then bring in Rick Rubin. He's probably the only other producer who could do it right.

Templeman is still working, but at a relaxed pace. He did a Joan Jett album in 2006, and is currently working with the Doobie Brothers. He once stated that recording Van Halen was ridiculously easier to record than the Doobies, effectively saying that with VH he just throws up some mics, they play and that's it, while with the DBs he has to take elaborate steps. So he definitely would be up to it, but with Eddie Van Halen being so iffy these days, the combination may or may not work out.

I totally disagree on Rick Rubin. The guy makes some of the flattest sounding records ever made, in homage to albums of the seventies. As a result, the drums sound like muffled cardboard boxes and the guitars are compressed to the point of mud. This (along with little, if any enhancement) leaves the vocals sounding dryer than the desert. And I won't mention the bass, mainly because I've never heard it.

If you think I'm kidding, check out AC/DC's Ballbreaker or that Metallica album from last year. Both are virtually unlistenable, at any volume.

Rubin did a good job on the Cult's Electric...20 some years ago.

Rubin did pretty well with Johnny Cash, Tom Petty, Danzig, and the Chili Peppers, just to name a few off the top of my head. He seems to have a pretty good ratio of success over failure, at least. Other factors are involved sometimes.... Ted Templeman and Andy Johns produced "F.U.C.K.", but neither of them, despite all their experience, could save that album from Sammy Hagar.

                    . . . the weezer songs i've heard produced by rubin are very good . . .

. . . as far as eddie van halen producing, his production style is more easy listening than heavy metal. for instance, OU812 wasn't that hard at all and the sammy album he produced didn't rock that substantially and neither did that song he did with alex for the twister soundtrack. and the record they did with cherone speaks for itself. then they bring in glen ballard for the best of both worlds and -- voila! -- the band got the kick in the pants it needed to sound like hard rock again . . .

                    . . . self-produced hasn't really worked for van halen, has it?

Ed's a cuntfused liar. He' says one thing here, another thing there, and gets pissy because we don't love every dram of music he puts out; after all, it is HIS way or the highway so like it or you get nothing you ungrateful heathens. FAK ORF!

Personally, I'd rather see Nick Raskulinecz' name under the producer credit...
Why settle for something you have, if it's not as good as something you're out to get?
