1984 -- Why So Few Videos?

. . . for an album as rich with potential hit singles seems odd the greatest rockers of all time didn't do more music videos for their masterpiece. after all, it's the holy grail of rock and it came out when the video era was in a mania. guess they didn't need to. they did videos for jump, panama and hot for teacher. i'll wait was a single yet no video. drop dead legs and top jimmy should have been released as singles too. woulda been huge . . .

. . . i love that album and it seems like every song could've been a radio hit. wishes they'd done more vids . . .

Because Edward was a total douche who wanted all the attention on his guitar. And any detraction of that--be it Dave's idea for new videos or Mike's interaction with the audience, then off Edward goes into his drunken-ego drama routine that we have seen time and time again!

They toured pretty heavy and right away for it... maybe they just didn't have time? I would have gladly settled for a live 3-pak á la Oakland 81!

You know the lying dutchmen will throw a shit-fit about that ever being released! I've never seen a band so unwilling to release any previously unknown audio or video of decent quality. Are they afraid of initiating the apocalypse or the torrent of lawyers that will pop out of the woodwork?

          Excuses, Exucuses, Motherfuckin Excuses!

That =VH= Guitar Hero better be damn good! I didn't purchase a new LCD tv for nothing!

Just my .02, but IMO 1984 was certainly not the holy grail of CVH....

Gimme VH I or Fair Warning before 1984 any day of the week....

Videos cost money... 3 for an album is/was pretty good for the time. Most records were lucky to get one.

videos do cost money. but they made Jump on a cheap budget using 8mm camera. everyone knows that story. at that time in the 80's bands were moving so fast, putting out records and videos all the time. and notice how in the mid-80's bands started to take longer hiatus between records, and the records became longer with the advent of the CD.

there was no shortage of promotion for 1984. VH did the "MTV Lost Weekend" giveaway and they had 3 videos. VH probably simply assumed there was no need for another video.

There's some outtakes on youtube from around that time - one I remember is a quite nicely stitched together bunch of looney stuff with a soundtrack of House of Pain - I don't know who did it, but it's not official. Some great footage of the band goofin around - but I think it is labelled 'Panama outtakes' rather than House of Pain.

I can't give you the link 'cos I keep gettin' told I need to download fuckin Flash player to view videos.

The Hot for Teacher vid with the band dancing badly dressed as the Temptations or one of those soul acts, is great

It was actually labelled 'Van Halen Behind the Scenes Footage' - but the link is inactive at youtube. My guess is that VH have pulled it since they set up their own youtube channel.

There was a longer version of this with the complete ending of ATBL, but I can't seem to find it...

I did a search on our threads over the years, there were two other copies, but both were removed for copyright crap....

I wonder if that is just a fraction of the footage sitting around waiting to be released.
