Osama Van Halen and the 50 Cent dictator

Tora Bora - or Tora Tora!! You decide!

The Guardian - top UK broadsheet daily paper - has today published an article purporting to reveal the musical tastes of some of the world's most evil men - top dictators and terrorists. Featured demogogues amongst the list of the most wanted include the odious Robert Mugabe (Zimbabwe) President Ahmadinejad (Iran) and Kim Jong-Il (North Korea). But, number one on the list? Who esle but Osama Bin Laden ... Fan of - you guessed it - "Van Halen, the B52s ... and Whitney Houston".

I don't mind a bit of B52s, but Whitney Houston???

The evidence for this claim, it seems, comes from a book written about Bin Laden by an ex-concubine named Kola Boof. The article says:

"In her autobiography, Boof claims that in 1996 she was kept as a 'sex slave' by bin Laden in Morocco, where he would 'become this devout party boy who wanted to hear Van Halen or some B-52s. To this day, I would hear the song Rock Lobster in my sleep. I would be jerking around like a white girl … 'Dance like a Caucasoid girl!' he would say."

Is it a coincidence that DLR once referred to Eddie as 'the Unabomber'? And that Eddie, in turn, described DLR as "Colonel Gaddafi" (also on the list here)?

The quote on Whitney Houston reminds me of this scene in American Psycho.

We had a member here a few years back named "Osama Bin Laden". Was it the real guy? Damned if I know, but his IP traced to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. I shit you not!

Don't bother searching the members list. His account got wiped in a previous remodel of the board. But some of his posts are still in the archives somewhere.....

Eddie did say that being on the road with Dave was like "being on the road with Omar Quadaffi or Idi Amin", which is such an absurd statement that it perfectly illustrates how ignorant, arrogant and thankless they were for having someone like Dave in the band in the first fuckin' place.

The only thing they had in their favor was the fact that they were stellar were stellar musicians. That's undeniable. But with Dave they had direction, and far more importantly, they had discipline.
Granted, on one hand, having someone in your band with a massive ego like Daves would be a fucking migraine headache to deal with, but on the other hand, the dude had a goal, and a direction. It's not exactly 'rocket science' to figure out that without Dave, as amazing as the brothers are musically, they wouldn't have made it to be one of the biggest bands of the 80's, or ever.

If memory serves correctly,Roth handled all of the press, cultivated the image, and made damn sure Van Halen stood head and shoulders above any and everyone playing the game at the the time....the music (as awesome as it is, and as much as you love it) was merely icing on the fucking cake, and I don't have to go far to defend that either....there are awesome musicians everywhere, some you may have heard in your local bar, or in the tiny living room of some keg party you've been at, and you wonder "Why the hell have they not made it?"....it's simple. They lacked focus, they lacked direction, they lacked discipline, they lacked someone like Diamond Dave.

Ed telling the press that touring with Roth was like touring with an evil dictator goes right up there with his equally ignorant statement in late '84 that "Van Halen is me and Al, everyone else is irrelevant". Mind-numbingly stupid, and a strong reminder of how fat, lazy, arrogant, and stupid they were at the time. The fastest way for a band to implode is to make them #1, or give them a #1 single or album....look how fast afterward the whole thing fell apart. It's easy, in retrospect to see this, but any band looking to make it in this business should take notes. It's a business, pure and fucking simple.

with all due respect, Edward. Without Dave, it's highly unlikely that we'd even know who you are, and you and your sister would be working for little more than minimum wage at some car wash somewhere...that's a FACT!

Dave had the lack of discipline, you got that the other way around when using the "d" word.

The Brothers brought DLR into discipline.
