You nailed that fucker ! I can totally see him saying that crap..
Even today, he tells anyone who cares that Van Hagar outsold
Van Halen double. Facts are Van Halen have almost outsold
Hagar 3-1. Would love a journo to give him a spec sheet
with real figures on it during an interview

People need to lay off MA. He's just keeping it real, possibly moreso than anybody else.

I would hate to think he didnt play on FW
Fair Warning is meant to be the 1st album that Ed ghosted Mike on. The story is that Ed used to sneak into the studio at night to re-do things when the others weren't around.

How much of the bass on that album is Ed, and how much is Mike I don't know, but Fare Warning is said to be the 1st album the Ed played bass on.

Agreed. He's kind of stuck in the middle of both fronts.

Like getting the shit seat on a school bus, he has to deal with everyone's shit.

Thank you gentlemen for your honest opinions. I do understand the mention of Mike strikes a raw nerve with some, and if I yanked your crank in the wrong way, my apologies.
This would be the place to get the answers I was looking for, as there are quite a few knowledgable folks here, and not just limited to CVH.
Still having a tough time staying logged in each time I try to make a post, or to thank folks for what they posted...don't want to come off as an ingrate.

Mike is a great back up high pitched singer...dont care much about his bass playing abilities really. I remember a few Bass solo's Ive skipped over.

Mike carried Dave in alot of songs and helped the overall sound. It'll be interesting to see what the new cd sounds like...if I can live that fuckin' long.

                    * actually his bass playing on the demo's and early live boots are excellent. I think Ed and Al just overshadowed his playn

That is true, BT...I've been listening to the Simmons/ Warner demos of late, and thinking the same thing, which is why I started this thread in the first place

Bass Player did what was required of him in that setting.....as others have mentioned, there was not a lot of room to do fretboard gymnastics with Eddie and Al being so busy, add Dave into the mix and having a busy bass player would of clogged up the sound.

He was/is a great bass player and the hardest thing for musicians to learn sometimes is what not to play.

Listen to Mikey live and he does have chops. His background vocals added an element to CVH's sound that not a lot of hard rock bands had.

All in all the guy did what was required for the music.......

                                E !

What makes you so sure ? (curious)
we have had interviews posted where EVH comes
straight out and says he laid down bass tracks
                                around that time.

Are you placing faith in your ear, or do you have solid
proof that EVH did not play a single recorded bass part
post WACF ? Combine Eddies comments and listening
to the bass lines, I think they chopped MA around
Fair Warning, obviously they included his singing.
Im not 100% convinced they chopped all of his parts,
but I think theres a lot of Ed in there.
