A little background: Where I grew up in NW PA, the Philadelphia Flyers, correction the entire city of Philadelphia is absolutely loathed... So when I read that Ed sent the Flyers' Dan Carcillo a pair of his sneakers, that just fucking figures....

Eddie Van Halen's next appearance at the Wachovia Center might be in the crowd, not on stage, if fledgling hockey icon Dan Carcillo has anything to do with it.
After Saturday's practice at the Skate Zone, Carcillo sported a pair of red, black and white Chuck Taylor high-top sneakers, a gift sent to him by the legendary rock guitarist.

It turns out the 55-year-old Van Halen has become a fan of the 25-year-old Carcillo, affectionately known to teammates as "Car Bomb." And since Van Halen has a new line of sneakers that resemble his signature red- and black-striped guitar, he figured he'd send his favorite Flyer a few pairs.
"They think I'm wild or whatever, and they wanted to send me some shoes," Carcillo said, "so I said all right."
As you might have guessed, Carcillo also happens to be a big fan of Van Halen.
"I kind of grew up on that rock and roll music," he said. "I definitely listened to Van Halen growing up."
Carcillo said he last saw Van Halen in concert three or four years ago in Toronto but can't remember whether it was a solo performance by Eddie Van Halen or a concert from the entire band.
"I can't remember, so it must have been a good concert," he said with a smile.
Asked what it's like to have a Hall of Fame rock legend become a fan of his, Carcillo laughed and said, "I haven't thought about it much, but obviously it's cool. You watch these guys in concert, and I'm a pretty big music guy. It's not like something like this happens every day."
In his first full season in Philadelphia since arriving in the unpopular trade for Scottie Upshall, Carcillo has evolved into a bit of a cult hero among Flyers fans.
On Dec. 6, he drew a four-game suspension from the NHL for knocking out Washington Capitals forward Matt Bradley with a sucker punch and made no apologies, saying, "Once your gloves are off as a fighter, you don't wait to get punched. You punch."
On Jan. 1, he grabbed a piece of Winter Classic history when he became the first player to initiate a fight in an outdoor game, dropping Bruins forward Shawn Thornton with an overhand right. On his way to the penalty box, Carcillo raised both arms in the air in a rock and roll salute.
