1984 - Story of The Album Cover

Never saw this before. Kinda cool. Although they could have done this in about 4 minutes instead of the 9 minutes this video is.

But she mentions the chrome ladies that VH originally wanted for the cover. Sounds kinda cool.

    Oh well. Enjoy!

(Apologies if this has been around before. I tried search & didn't find anything. Considering this YouTube only has 700 or so views, doesn't look like it's been posted here before either)

Great story, not only does it have an interview with the painter, but has a couple of pictures of the model, named Carter Helm....

I love the part about the candy cigarettes. I remember those. Chocolate, gum, or a hard candy type. No way in hell a candy maker could get away with selling those nowadays.

They sell them still. They just call them candy sticks now.

Very cool. I've never heard the whole story about the cover before...

It'd be cool to see the actual photo she took...

Hmm. If anything, it resembles a young Dave with the early VH attitude. Maybe if it had a neck brace on it wou.....nah, nevermind.

i thot it resembled that not only does EVERYONE fit the mold of a Van Halen fan, but even the most innocent of babies would feel a lil' corrupted listening to it!

Im interested in what 4 chrome dancers would look like?

I wonder if the 'chrome dancers' idea that VH presented to her was actually this illustration of a satyr canoodling with some ladies:

I like it. I haven't seen it used on anything, but it turned up on one of the galleries on DLR's site. They should use this as their new logo ...

For those into ancient mythology, the most well-known representation of the satyr-figure is Pan. Just did a quick look on wikipedia, which says: "Pan (Greek Πάν, genitive Πανός), in Greek religion and mythology, is the god of shepherds and flocks, of mountain wilds, hunting and rustic music, as well as the companion of the nymphs."

Why else would Dave call a VH tour 'hide your sheep'? He is Pan.

Dang Scraps. You're a regular Sherlock Holmes. Great find. I could totally see this design being re-done as chrome figures.

Awesome! I always wanted to know the story behind the 84 cover.

                            Great find.
