Mark Stone was the bass guitar player in a band called Mammoth from 1972 - 1974. Mammoth also featured Eddie Van Halen (lead vocals and guitar) and Alex Van Halen (drums).[1] In early 1974 vocalist David Lee Roth joined the band, who shortly thereafter changed their name to Van Halen. By around mid 1974, the group felt that Stone's commitment to school outweighed his interests in pursuing music professionally, and decided to look for another bass player. Michael Anthony, from the Pasadena-area band Snake, was chosen as Stone's replacement. Stone remained on good terms with his former bandmates, and attended Eddie Van Halen's marriage to Valerie Bertinelli in 1981.

Though Stone has never been credited with any songwriting for Van Halen, recordings of early Van Halen originals dating to circa 1974 have surfaced which purportedly feature Stone on bass. Over the years there has been increasing fan interest in the early history of Van Halen, and Stone's tenure with the group. During the transitional period after the joining of David Lee Roth, with Stone playing bass, the band relied predominantly on cover songs for their live set, but were also in the early phase of writing and performing original compositions. It is not known to what degree Stone was involved in the composition of these early Van Halen originals, although he is said to have played on the band's first demo recordings that were given to Michael Anthony to learn for his formal audition with the group.

Stone is still currently living in Pasadena. He appeared in the DVD "Van Halen Story- The Early Years", released in 2003 by E1 Entertainment.

                I watched it last night....

Nothing earth-shattering, nothing that we idiots haven't heard before... Nice to hear Trunk and the others give the praise deserved to The Mighty Van Halen...

They actually tried to compare 1984 and 5150... Trunk and dumbass Kip Winger actually preferred 5150...

I haven't found the full clip yet, but here was the sneak peak they put out beforehand....

Never liked Trunk. He seems like the guy who really doesn't like the music, but tries to educate himself on it so he can hang out with the cool kids after school.

5150 better than 1984? What are the parameters we are using here? Better for what? Better for the integration of keyboards, electronic drums, and wasted guitar riffs?

They may have said that just to keep the interview happy smiley since mike is still paired with Hagar. If the interview were with Dave their answers woulda been different. Like I said...Trunk is a pretender and just wants to be included with the cool kids.

That would be cool. Hell, I wish Dave would go anywhere right now for an interview. Dying here for an "official" update.

But Dave isn't really "metal". He's the dude who brought Vaudeville to Heavy Metal.

that was the funny thing, Trunk was complaining about hearing 1984 and Jump the first time and thinking "what are these keyboards?" and took a little swipe at I'll Wait. then he totally glosses over the fact that the keyboard songs on 5150 are MUCH sappier than the ones on 1984.

i also thought Trunk was being courteous to MA due to the Sammy connection, and Trunk even said he'd love to have Sammy on the show.

after Trunk practically cried about someone mentioning the '96 tracks being included on the '07 tour ("why would they play those awful songs?" in a whiny voice), i didn't care too much about his opinion. that and he's known as a KISS suckass. next week's show with Kulick should be good for 25 minutes of puckered lips to Kulick's ass.

Heard on Trunk's XM show that the invite is out there for all of VH...he figures they have not done any press because they don't have anything to push yet.

Trunk's four hours on XM's Boneyard is the best programed of that channel...the closet thing to the premeger Boneyard...which Sirius fucked up.

Trunk often says the classic VH albums are untouchable...but has always said that Sammy is the more melodic singer...which is Trunk's thing.

Fair enough...but he plays deep VH with Roth and rarely and Van Hager...
