    Classic Rock Magazine

Was on their site checking sub prices, and saw this for next month:

There is also a 1984 cover with text on the home page, but it's too small to make out:

This mag is pretty kick ass, but $75 USD for 12 issues is just too much...luckily, there's a local record store that carries it. I'll let you folks know what's inside when I pick it up.

It's a great mag - there's so much more depth to their features than most music mags these days.

As promised, here's the skinny on the new issue of CR: The cover was as shown earlier...the b&w Iwo Jima/ Memorial Day shot. The 1984 cover is actually the cardboard sleeve the mag comes in.
9 pg article, 7 actual pages of text, with a byline on the boy from the cover of 1984, (who is now 31! Ouch!).
Article title: Full Blast & Top Down: Fighting with the Clash, recording with Jacko, swapping guitars for synths-how the wheels came off of Roth-era Van Halen: the bad feeling that fueled feel-good rock classic 1984.
Just got home with it, and haven't read a word, so go get your own copy, dammit!!

Thanks for the info! Yeah CR is a great mag and a 9 page story is pretty good coverage. I will have to pick up a copy.

          CR is a great mag.

Some neat backstory info on the real Top Jimmy.

Kind of odd that the first full-page picture in the article is clearly a shot of the band on the 1984 tour, yet the mag states it was a shot taken in 1983.

CR is really the last mag standing that prints rock articles I'm interested in reading. Yeah, it's definitely not cheap over here in the US (or always easy to find, either)...was thinking about getting a subscription myself several years back, but I don't end up buying every issue when I find it on the magazine racks as it is anyway...maybe 6 out of 12 per year for the last few years.

A bit sad that the only decent music mags tend to come from overseas these days. I mean, what the fuck is up with Rolling Stone? The last two issues had cover stories on Justin Bieber and Snookie. One senses pickle puffer Wenner's sensibilities has more than a bit to do with that shite. Even for RS, which has sucked for decades now, this streak is a new low.

My local Borders used to carry it until about two years ago, when they started downsizing their on-hand inventory.

The Barnes and Noble nearest you should carry it.

I walked into Borders the other day and they say "Are you looking for the Sammy Hagar book?"

I said "Nah, I'm looking for something about music"

                Have to hit B & N, I guess

When the Borders salesperson asked you if you were looking for the Sammy Hagar book, did you respond with your fists (or at least some rough language)?

A good response would have been, "no, i'm not into science fiction."

I know what you mean about Rolling Stone. And yeah CR is a bit pricey so I only buy a copy now and then.

I know what you mean. I think it's because they use journos who are over the age of 30. Guys who can contextualize a band's importance and changes in rock'n'roll and the music industry more generally. There is depth that comes with experience.

Plus, and I'm sorry to say it, music journos back in the day were much better writers than they are now.

All I can say right now is.....Bravo!

John Scanlan turned in a very well-written, detailed, and insightful look into the making of 1984.
A 7-page trip back in time, and toward the end of it, you realize that this album wasn't randomly chosen to be the subject matter. There's definitely a reason behind it, with a strong message to the 'here and now'.

I don't want to fuck it up for anyone who hasn't had the chance to grab their copy yet, but I do recommend that any fan of this band give it a read.

                            Once again......Bravo!
Send Mr. Scanlan a beer, and tell the waitress that Hammy's picking up the tab.
