    I'm old enough to remember that Van Halen was labelled as a metal band in 1978 and the tag stayed with them for years to come. I recall one article in the mid-80s describing them as 'pop metal'.

        They stagger the segments, but it's towards the end of the show.....

                  It was the gonzo drums, heavy bass lines, maniacal crunchy guitar, long hair, primal screams and beer drinking that put them in the metal category.

                  Can't really put VH in any specific category as the first 6 albums are truly their own sound & style that had never been replicated by anyone else.
