Even if the band had changed it's name to Van Hagar and nobody had said anything negative about Roth, it's not as if that would have made the pap Van Halen released after 1985 sound any better.

Ronnie James Dio and Johnson respected what came before them, but if Sabbath and AC/DC had put out shit music with those two respective singers, all their praises for those who followed them wouldn't have mattered much.

Just as if Ed, Sam and Al had made all their comments about how Roth sucked and Van Hagar created music on a par with classic Van Halen, nobody would have cared.

Bottom line is it's the music that gets the respect in the end. All the barbs Ed, Al and Sammy sling Roth's way in the press are meaningless because they have nothing to offer by way of the music.

I've always said if they'd given it some other name and left Van Halen as what it was, the whole thing would be less fucked up.

I wouldn't have wanted it named Van Hagar though; some name totally unrelated to Van Halen would've been better.

Of course, it wouldn't have made me like the music any better, but at least if it had of been named something else, Van Halen as a rock entity would be seen as what it was, and not part of the crap that came after.

I like Dio and Johnson's voices. Not Sammy's. I hated "I Can't Drive 55," I hated 5150 as soon as it came out, and I hated Sammy before I even knew about him disrespecting Roth's legacy. The fact that he talks shit about Roth only adds insult to injury for me.

I don't have any hate for Sammy...I've seen what hate can do if left unmanaged, namely Sept. 11, so therefore I can't say that I hate Sammy or that I'd wish him harm in any way.

However, he IS an egotistal, pompous, fat-ass, grade-A stamped guaranteed JERK.

Would I like Van Hagar if they respected Classic Van Halen? I might have more personal respect for them, but musically, their music 1986+ was the anchor to their continuing slow painful sinking of the 3 remaining members' musical credibility.

As for Dio, I personally never liked his lyrical content, but his solo stage sets were nothing short of magical. IMO, he didn't do much for Sabbath lyrically. (I'm very lyrically based when it comes to reviews and opinions).

Brian Johnson is a different story. Bon Scott died, and after seeing Brian's old band 'Geordie' perform, he remarked that Brian was his favourite singer. So actually, it was Bon that chose Brian to head off AC/DC. As you can see, this is WAY off with regards to the comparison to Van Halen/Van Hagar.

But I pose this to everyone...

Was Black Sabbath really Black Sabbath after Ozzy left?
