More From Tremonti On The Next VH (94.3 KILO Radio Audio Clip 6/30/11)

This showed up on Youtube last night, but I was too damned tired to bother with it. In any event, Mark Tremonti called in to Ross Ford's morning show yesterday and spoke of his recent trip to 5150. He mentioned how this came about and the "old-school" VH performance he witnessed. He also describes just where those tunes happened to come from.

Ross talks to Mark from Alter Bridge about Van Halen

Very cool. Interesting about picking up some old tunes to rework. Let's hope that Marshall got dusted off and used.

      Well, here's for hoping.

Given that he keeps talking about great a bass player Wolfie is, I might take his glowing praise for the new record with a tubby-sized pinch of salt.

All instrumentation and no Dave yet could mean this batch of tunes were what Lukather was referencing when he said they had a great album and were waiting for the perfect singer. And that was a long time ago. It's pretty hard to imagine we're finally going to get an album from them after all this time but it looks like it's really going to happen. It would be great to hear from Dave. His vocals were great on Take Savara so he can still bring it in the studio.

My take on the interview was that it was a rehearsal, and not just a playing of the new album. In other words, I didn't get the impression that they put the new album in the CD player and played Tremonti a bunch of tracks without vocals. It sounds like they were playing new tracks live in the studio, without vocals. Did anyone else have a different take?

Well it's cool to hear that it's more of a CVH flavor. Now let's get it out there!! Man, I can't wait to dissect the album and pick out the old riffs.... I'm crossing my fingers as hard as I can that there are no keyboards on this one...

Pretty much what I figured as well. It is interesting to note that the word "rehearsal" was used, as you have to wonder just how much of the new album the Australian folks are going to hear at the Soundwave gigs. It is also unclear if the entire album was played for Tremonti, and how many songs from it are in fact reworked demos.

I can't believe I'm about to say this after all these years of analyzing every little bit of VH news with a microscope, but for now I'm not going to attempt to read too much into things. What we have at hand is evidence offered by one guy, and no one knows for a fact just how deeply his awareness of Van Halen goes. Besides, as a fellow professional musician, he wasn't exactly going to come forward and say another's music wasn't so hot.

There isn't anything at all wrong with being a bit (or very, for that matter) cynical at this late stage of the game, yet hopefully we'll all soon have the evidence in our hands, and will be able to voice our own views of it.

Hopefully it will all sound fresh being that many of us have tons of boots with unrelesed stuff. Let's see what they do with it. Was kinda hoping it would be all new stuff but beggars can't be choosy can they?

It sounds to me like he was very impressed with what he heard. It wasn't like he was put on the spot and just said it was good, to be professional. I wish the interviewer would have asked if he knew when the album might be released, but my guess is Ed probably told him certain things that he shouldn't say.

I think he was definately talking about a rehearsal. Either before the band entered the studio with Dave in January for the recording sessions, or they were just jamming them out for fun at 5150.

I think it will be a mix of old and new. I don't think we will get just a new recording of 'Let's Get Rockin', rather a new song with the riff and different lyrics and contemporary production.

Is no one gonna comment on the new picture up on VHND? IS it a new picture of the four of them? Sorry, I just can't bring myself to call them Van Halen with that kid in the frame. I don't care if he's the fucking Rain Man of bass...he's got no business up on stage with the three of them. I'm sure he can play whatever Eddie wants him to play on the new record. But What The Fuck??? They're gonna pass off this sumbitch as a legitimate part of Van Halen??? Dave, Eddie and Al have a history together, a common background. And what does Wolfie bring to the table? Not a fucking thing. I swear to God, they should have hired a chick bass player to fill in the high notes. I tolerated Wolfie being there for the opening night in Charlotte. But you're gonna tell me that kid adds anything to the mix of Classic Van Halen??? Fuck it. I'm just about so sick of the whole thing that I want to say I won't buy the record. But I know I will, and I'll piss and moan the whole time I'm listening to it.

The image is from a photo session for Rolling Stone from about 5 years ago. Feel better now?
