(This is hardly Earth-shattering, but it is worth a mention with so little news coming out of the vacation resort known as Van Halen Land. I discovered this little tidbit completely by accident, and didn't even know the book existed until I found it misfiled in the music section of a store.)
The guy that opened for VH on the 2007 tour apparently wrote and published a book sometime last year. Titled Dear Dad (Farrah Gray Publishing, 2010), the work covers the life so far of yet another of Bob Marley's offspring. At only around 240 pages, it isn't exactly a fully compelling tale, and is written in the predictable style of anyone that wakes and bakes.
In any event, to save you about 10 bucks (the Roth mention is only about 3 paragraphs and comes near the end), Marley claims that of all VH's opening acts, he managed to survive the longest. He also mentions some "racist-shit" (his words) that took place early on during the tour, supposedly coming between the stagehands and roadies working for both camps. Marley says that Dave met with him, where they discussed Marley's father, life in general, and the situation as it appeared to Dave. According to Marley, Dave promised to rectify things personally and did so. The incidents stopped immediately.
He also mentions that the next day, Roth's manager approached Marley with a "gift" from Dave. It turned out to be a miniature model of an airplane, with 4 joints rubber banded underneath the wings. Marley was much amused by this, as well as being admiringly grateful of Dave's intervention on his behalf in the situation.
Yeah, I know, it isn't that big of a deal. Yet it does give you a little bit of insight into the adult Dave's character, as well as reaffirming why so many of us admired the guy in the first place.
