82 and 84 tours never matched that night - I never saw the 80 invasion but 81 was amazingComment

82 and 84 shows at the Forum were good but nothing compared to 81...I've got some old 8mm footage around somewhere - probably not as good as Oakland but I'll try to find itComment

The 1980 Invasion was fucking amazing. Way out of control. They had refined the show a bit more by the 81 tour.
First thing I remember noticing was Ed's haircut. Fuck,he had a lot chopped off. Being right down in front I was amazed and blown away
at how fucking loud Ed's stage volume was. I think he even had a couple of cabinets under the stage angled up through the steel grating he had below his stage front area. I was pure heaven...

The 1980 Invasion was my first taste of the mighty Van Halen live. It was general admission so we got to the venue early and hung around all day. When the doors opened it was a mad sprint to the stage. I was right on the barricade and snuck a camera in. I still have the negatives somewhere. I have a cool shot of Eddie where the lights are kind of washing him out but you can still see the detail and he's leaning back playing for broke. My ears rang for a day or two.
