if Eddie thinks DLR (or anyone in their mid-fifties) is going to have the sustain and power in his voice of one of the American Idol kids, he has to have his head examined. After Dave went through a period in the mid-nineties of letting his voice go, I'd say he has done a bang-up job the last half dozen tours or so. On the last VH tour i think DLR got the power, sustain, and focus back in his voice that he hadn't had in years, probably some due to Eddie's pushing. But he ain't going to get much better than that at his age. DLR on the last tour certainly sounded WORLDS better than Hagar. Hagar is the example, at this point, of someone who can hit notes...but even on the album there is no longer any quality or sustain - he is just screeching approximations of notes he used to be able to sing. DLR on the other hand can at least hold the notes he could always sing, even if he lost the ability to do the overtone-style whistle stop throat singing (which was technically very difficult! - he never got enough credit for it in my opinion). I mean, if he wants the DLR vocals of 84, his only choice would be Ralph Saenz (speaking of which, Steel Panther is the OBVIOUS choice to open for another VH tour, if the world made any sense).
But this album isn't about perfect technical proficiency - it's about getting the songwriting team back together (at least) one last time to see if they can "do it" again. If this tweet is true, Eddie VH needs to let there be some imperfection. To do otherwise is to deny aging and deny life. After all, doesn't he have arthritis in his fingers? I mean, times-a-tickin!

Agreed - Ed just needs to lay down some fuckin' bangin' riffs and let Dave be fuckin' Dave... Don't worry about, he's a professional - it'll be just fine. Let Dave sing in his natural zone - NOT MWM zone.
That tweet from the twit has been proven to be bunk - that guy is batting -1000.

Jagger, Dylan, Hendrix, and a million others don't have what I'd call a great voice but........I couldn't picture/imagine anyone else singing for those guys.
Roth has an awesome voice for VH, period.
