The track he cut that ended up as the theme song for the early 80s animated movie Heavy Metal was okay...pretty decent by Hagar standards.
Beyond that, as a solo act the best of what he has to offer is, to me, just very average straight-up rock music of no particular distinction in terms of either musicianship or lyrically.
The stuff Van Halen did when he was in the band was, at times, interesting. However, for me said interesting stuff was such on an instrumental level only. Even on a decent track like Humans Being, Hagar's vocal delivery was flat and uninspired. This is putting all the Dave vs. Van Hagar press bitching aside; even if Hagar had been gracious and respectful in print about what Roth had done with Van Halen, that theoretical goodwill wouldn't elevate the quality of Hagar's contributions to the band for me.
