The track he cut that ended up as the theme song for the early 80s animated movie Heavy Metal was okay...pretty decent by Hagar standards.

Beyond that, as a solo act the best of what he has to offer is, to me, just very average straight-up rock music of no particular distinction in terms of either musicianship or lyrically.

The stuff Van Halen did when he was in the band was, at times, interesting. However, for me said interesting stuff was such on an instrumental level only. Even on a decent track like Humans Being, Hagar's vocal delivery was flat and uninspired. This is putting all the Dave vs. Van Hagar press bitching aside; even if Hagar had been gracious and respectful in print about what Roth had done with Van Halen, that theoretical goodwill wouldn't elevate the quality of Hagar's contributions to the band for me.
    Scramby eggs and bacon.

Never bought BOV I, and have never thought the two songs were that good, relatively speaking....

I've always thought that Van Hagar's best song was the EVH-impacted There's Only One Way to Rock.....

I've noticed the same thing. I never liked Stern that much to begin with --- but if he switched loyalties from the World's Greatest Frontman to Hagarita the Pussy Nugget --- well then fuck him and his horse-faced wife. Fuck 'em to hell.

I hope Dave convinces the band NOT to do a Stern interview when the new album comes out. Howard will be PISSED about that but who gives a flying fuck. Stern's career is a joke now anyway --- he only works 2 days a week.

I did wonder what went wrong between Dave and Howard. I listened to parts of the Hagar interview when he was promoting Red, and as soon as Hagar was introduced HS made a dig about Dave's hair. I don't think he likes Hagar but that's his way of getting back at Dave. I doubt vh will go on his show. He lost a lot of listeners moving to Sirius.

I don't care how much of a hard-on Ed had for Sam at the time, it just wasn't the same "desperate men in search of desperate treasure" vibe that they had with Dave.
Dave had a certain jazzy swagger to him and that kind of flavored the band. You aren't going to get Ice Cream Man from Sammy. Sammy was the weak link in Van Hagar. What was interesting was with a different singer who could sing higher it did inspire the band in a different direction and some of the songs are good but as soon as Sammy's vocals kick in it's like nails on a chalkboard to me.

Song wise I always liked the whacky guitar on Sucker In a Three Piece. Poundcake is a good song too. But it's all the different stuff Ed and the boys were doing not the cheese clown in red.

Well, here is the thing: Dave's whole musical persona is based on the REAL SHIT. Comparisons he makes of himself to Al Jolson are no bullshit. He is directly inspired by the old Blues Masters of the 20s to the 50s, as well as jazz players from that same time frame.

He picked that stuff up and ran with it.

Spambot picked up inspiration from Bette Midler, and Ronald McDonald.

                Quite obvious, actually.

I think Stern jumped the shark a while back.

The whole shtick doesn't work so well when you are worth hundreds of millions, have a model on your arm and own the radio station.

Stern sucks. But then, I always found him to a be a whiny and horny radio fool whose interviews and content are typically more boring than interesting. Let him suck Sammy's dick a little longer, the two-faced prick.

I listened to the Alex Bennett show for many years living in the Bay Area. I don't know if the show was syndicated. He did great interviews. I think CBS bought the Alex' station and gave him the boot. He was replaced by Howard. This was years ago .

Dave took a lot from American pop culture and made it his own. It's a lot more sophisticated than "I can't drive 55", or "I need a job!". I think Dave once called Sammy's lyrics word barf.

That's exactly why a VH interview with Stern would be a huge waste of time. Stern would spend most of the interview asking what color panties Janie wears or how often she gives head ---- versus the hard, probing questions like why Eddie felt it was OK to replace Mike Anthony with the chubby kid.

Howard Stern is a tired old bag of shit these days. The "shock jock" persona lost its appeal in the mid-90's.

I'd love to see a one-hour interview with Henry Rollins and Dave. Rollins isn't afraid to ask the hard questions, but he also fully understands the Tao of Dave and would let him roam freely. It would be an instant classic.

For every song Hagar song created with Van Halen, the Van Halens should create and drop an instrumental arrangement.

I think Alex is still doing the morning show on Sirius' "America Left" channel now, though he didn't sound all that Liberal to me when I listened to his show. Anyway, that's where he is if you want to hear him.

I listened to Stern interview Hagar after his book came out. I wanted to hear what the man who has seen aliens said about how fucked up EVH was, cuz that's entertaining stuff. But the thing is, no matter what an ass I thought Sammy Hagar was, Stern's schtick wore thin very quick. I live in the UK, so it's not like I can listen to him everyday, and get tired of hearing him too much. By the end of the interview, he was asking Hagar's wife if she ever got it on with Valerie Bertinelli.

And Hagar being a businessman sat and took it. He had books to sell. I mean yor wife is right there, some guy is saying, hey your missus is one hot babe - did she ever do it with Val, and you don't knock his lights out!?

It was like after that infamous 'I cured cancer' interview with Ed, when everybody was saying after it what a jerk Ed was for saying that he knew Wolf was beating the meat 'cos he spent so long in the bathroom - this was after Stern wearing him down, and repeating the question every time there was space to gulp air: 'do you think Wolfie is bagging any chicks yet'. On and on and on. It's just old, and pretty boring really.
