Would the same question have been asked if Patty Smyth had been the choice?

Sammy's best stuff: pre-VH -- Three Lock Box, Dick in the Dirt, Heavy Metal -- fun drinking songs. Problem is that Sam never did anything as edgy as the same-era VH, no Lighting up the Sky, House of Pain, D.O.A. Those cuts had bite. Sam was butterscotch schnapps. VH was Jack straight-up.

Patty Smyth wouldn't have been dumb enough to refuse singing any of the DLR era classics while touring. Hagar crapped all over the history of this band and its core fan base by doing his best to ignore that great catalogue of songs for 11 long years.

Heck, Gary Cherone was a downright disaster in VH, but at least he had enough respect for both the fans and the legacy of this band to embrace the DLR era catalogue while touring. He wasn't forcing "More than words" down the throats of the audience at a goddamn VH show...

Holy flashback. I remember back at our county fair I saw 3/4 of this poster hanging on a carnie's booth - the one where you have to throw darts to pop a balloon. Mike, Ed, and Al were all I could see since the greasy biker dude was standing in front of Sammy, so all I could see was his curly blonde mop top (and remember, at this point in time in my young and naive life I was just thankful that 'Van Halen' was still a band). So I pop the darts and without moving the carnie tosses me a rolled up poster. I didn't unroll it until I got home - stoked to have a new 'Van Halen' poster on my wall. Went up to my room. Unrolled it. Saw Sammy's outfit and thought...

                WTF?

Why is Bette Midler standing with Van Halen? Needless to say that poster didn't make the cut...

Of course, the real irony in place here is the fact that Culture Club actually came up with a handful of pretty good tunes. And while the insipid Hagar was too terrified to handle Dave Roth's tunes in VH, fucking Boy George had the balls to cover David Bowie's "Starman."

And much like Van Hagar, the whole band wasn't gay, just the lead singer and the drummer that played for both sides....

Dudes - remember when Dave said he wanted Culture Club on the bill at the Us Fest? I don't think he was kidding.

Dya think he borrowed this outfit from one of Culture Club??? That's Boy George in the cap, and a singer called Marilyn on the opposite side. He had some hits in the UK back in the 80s. I am tempted to post a clip ... if I can find it.
