How will the new VH record do saleswise?

I was sitting around at home, when this extremely important question popped into my head: How much will the new VH album sell?

The first cheeseinfested album from Chickenfoot went gold in the US, so we should at least expect it to go platinum, or is Van Halen's position in the marketplace eroded because of all the years of bullshit and no activity?

That depends. How much does the label want to invest in marketing?

(And, IMO, C*********t isn't worthy of platinum-status. No matter how many times Spam mentions VH in every single interview he gives...)
Why settle for something you have, if it's not as good as something you're out to get?

I agree with Coyote --- all depends how hard Interscope is willing to push it on the marketing side. We dont know any details on which retail outlets are involved --- Walmart? Target? Best Buy? All three?

My guess is that if Interscope can get those large cardboard stands near the front entrance of Best Buy and near the aisles at Target --- it should sell at least 3 million copies with ease. It will definitely sell at least 1.5 million because of all the Internet buzz and built-in fanbase waiting 27 years for new Roth-VH music.

I think the band fucked up by not releasing the album this weekend to capitalize on the holiday shopping frenzy --- lots of MILFs out there with itchy credit card fingers looking to buy a nice gift for their VH-lovin' studs or sons or nephews, etc.

It wouldn't be outside the realm of possibility to hypothesize that a new Van Halen record would attain platinum status without too much difficulty.

Multiplatinum? To the order of two million + ?

        Mmmm, perhaps...

Would have to agree with Coyote and TJMKID that moving units much beyond a million would take some sort of retailer distribution deal being put in place and a bit of strategy involving a release date and ample promotion.

What bears mentioning is that Van Halen may have reached the point where such bands as the Rolling Stones are at these days; being able to sell out arenas no longer necessarily correlates with album sales (outside of the diehards, do the vast bulk of people willing to go to a Van Halen show in 2012 really even CARE if the band releases any new music? If the answer is "not really"...not so good for potential record sales).

Well, the media over here has mentioned VH in recent times... At least once.

If Azoff goes full bore and exploits the band in every way through media, it should do pretty good. Shouldn't be too hard to top Chickencoch's hype.
They simply need to turm Dave loose on the media and the band needs to make themselves totally accessible.
They need to fire Ed's bitch and hire Bert Michaels publicist. That talentless turd owes everything to his publicity team. Christ, I think my Mom knows who he is...
(Of course she's fully aware of who Van Halen )
Trolls take heed...LOG OUT & FUCK OFF!!!

It ain't about CD sales anymore....

It's about the number of downloads on iTunes.

What I like is you can buy the individual songs you want instead of having to buy a whole album. I still call them albums which by definition means a collection. A collection of songs for sale. I never liked CD's. They seem to get dirty, skip, the players were horrible. The portable ones were even worse. I broke so many skiing. I love MP3's and the players are bulletproof. I for one am glad to see CD's go.

I call them records, because they are recordings.

So how do iTunes downloads count towards official album sales numbers? If someone downloads "Eat Thy Neighbor" from the new album --- does that count as (1) album sale --- or do they have to DL every song to have it count as an album sale ???

That's just one song. If one should want the rest of the album, one can click "complete my album" to get the rest of it later...
And, of course, iTunes/the artist can also restrict the amount of downloadable individual songs, by making some available as part of "album download". (Which isn't a bad idea, IMO.)

Let's say there's an album with 10 songs, out of which 8 songs are available individually. Ya want all 10? Download the whole album.

Terry and I have been on the same wavelength for over a decade now...

The new album will most likely go platinum solely because it's Van Halen with Dave....

But as Terry said, anything beyond that will depend on how good it is....

Has it been a decade? Man...time flies.

But yeah, I could see a million units being moved without too much difficulty.

I think and hope it goes platinum, otherwise it may damage Ed's ego like III did.

I'm confident it will go at least platinum, and it could do even better than that. Black Ice by AC/DC went double platinum, but that album was not sold in any digital format. Chinese Democracy, went platinum, and that was a real turd of an album.

I think with a solid album, and real promotion that features Dave heavily, multi-platinum should be within reach.
