From our very own Greeneyedmurder, enjoy.....
After nearly 3 ½ years of no activity and no communication from Van Halen, fans are enjoying what they came to accept might never be possible: a new album (A Different Kind Of Truth), a 49-date North American tour, and acknowledgement of the band's online fans.
Shortly after an official online video announcing the upcoming tour and album (released this past Tuesday) were put on the web, representatives at lead singer David Lee Roth's Diamond Dave Enterprises offered an exclusive behind-the-scenes video of the singer to longtime Roth fan site the Roth Army.
Less than a week after their successful small club show at Cafe Wha? in New York last month, Van Halen released the first single off the new album, “Tattoo.”
Soon after, the band put out a video of their first-ever acoustic version of “You Really Got Me”, as well as one of Roth interviewing guitarist Eddie Van Halen and drummer Alex Van Halen about their childhood, among other Internet exclusives.
Recently, Roth has been giving interviews to a variety of publications recently – from the Los Angeles Times to the Toronto Sun – full of his trademark humorous and often provocative quotes.
The publicity and attention to the Internet fan community have paid off so far, with “Tattoo” hitting #1 on the Billboard Hard Rock Singles Chart and the album possibly grabbing the #1 spot on the Billboard 200 chart by the end of this weekend.
The 13 songs on ADKOT come from demos and other unreleased tracks from the 70s – most of which diehards easily recognize, while many enthusiasts and music writers praise how modern the Classic Van Halen sound is on this album. Former replacement singer Sammy Hagar is unimpressed. Before the album's release, the current Chickenfoot singer told Radio Metal: “I think there's zero inspiration and zero creativity.” He took shots at the band delving into their vaults for material, as well as at Eddie Van Halen's sobriety and condition during the ill-fated “Van Halen Reunion” tour on which they teamed up in 2004.
In addition to the New York show last month, Van Halen played 2 more invite-only shows in the last week – both in Los Angeles, one in the small Henson Studios and a dress rehearsal at the Forum.
The tour starts on February 18, in Louisville, Kentucky and ends June 26, in New Orleans. A number of dates already sold out.
