My previous post prompted an idea... we know the business folks are keeping tabs on these boards. There's a lot of damn good creative folks posting here that could either make or write the scripts for some stellar videos to promote this album and tour. DDE/Interscope have already shown they have no problem leveraging the fan internet sites for a core portion of their marketing... Why not tap it further?

Look at what happened when the Tattoo video stirred reactions... some young, enterprising videographers were inspired to make something better in their vision. Tap that... hold a cuntest and award a fan voted choice for a best Van Halen like produced music video. There's a ton of good quality live video from the tour out there... combine that with some creative editing of other material and just don't let the IP lawyers get crazy over use of the music... Could prove fruitful for all.

What you are describing could be far bigger than simply a Van Halen video contest, it could be another tv show in and of itself. The entire key to this would be the reward for the effort, yet today, I'm unsure how this would be received. Sure, you can hope that a token statue or plaque would be enough to reward the ego of they person creating the finished product (and their hopes for establishing a career in the film industry that goes along with it), but more than likely, a huge cash pay out would be the answer. Then again, look how many seriously deranged people try out for American Idol, seeking Christ knows what.

Everything about the concept holds some intrigue, from the amusement of the unhinged takes to the serious attempts at art it could create. Hell, it might even spur the return of a real music video channel in the process.

VH gets more attention that you could expect after all the drama and all the waiting...they generated some media attention, the album hit the charts higher than you could expect after 28 years and the tour is selling strong...mission accomplished...

1985 is long gone...so is MTV and so are the record stores...outside of the US they totally lost their fanbase...I don't want to see them do "Letterman", except they play the roof in front of the studio like Paul McCartney did...

The 40+ people are the only ones who have actually seen the original VH lineup in concert in person!

I think Interscope has done a pretty good job promoting the album, although I could think of a few things in hindsight that they could have improved upon, like: advertising during the Super Bowl (or having at least SOME television spots promoting the album), a world-wide same-day release to cut down on pirating, choosing 'Blood And Fire' instead if 'Tattioo' as the first single, and picking any other day other than the Grammy's to debut the album.

Makes sense in the current economy. Recent stats show 54% of youngsters 18-29 years old are unemployed. This used to be the prime marketing demographic for entertainment, but the well has gone dry. Sadly, 70% of that same age group admits to piracy of music and movies on-line as well. Stats are quoted from a recent Time article on the jobless generation.

Baby boomers and generation X & Y pretty much hold the job market and money today. But you've got to figure most folks at the median income level today can't afford $100+ concert tickets. Plus over half the millenniums can't afford a $14 CD... The industry should take note if they can see past their greed...

And therein lies the problem. The industry will continue to die a slow death while it waits for the rest of the world to change around them.
