True ! I think without question Chinatown should have been the first single. It's heavy but you can sing to it. And it would have fit in with the sound of the newer top 40 metal bands like Shinedown or whatever. It has the old school Van Halen attitude but still sounds new. I think it would have turned some younger listeners heads anyway that don't listen to classic rock.. Stay Frosty should have been 2nd. It's a fan favorite ! Fine if they don't play it live but try and get it on the radio at least. She's the Woman is cool but kind of thin in a way. The album has way better songs on it. Thats what I would have told the band if they asked. Tattoo is a good tune but subpar for a first single after 28 years !
3rd single from ADKOT

This might be a bit long but bear with me . . . . . Sadly Interscope know that the main purchasers for ADKOT will be old Van Halen fans and getting non VH to buy it will be a huge ask. For me Tattoo and She's the Woman fair pretty typical VH fare and releasing them as singles was a decent call. Stay Frosty has the chance to reach a non VH audience because of the nature of the song; it was #1 on a VHND poll of fans with over 50k votes cast so now the album is a relatively established seller, I guess they see it as an opportunity to cast the net just a bit wider. Only problem is there's no guarantee the pluggers will actually get it on radio. Interscope won't have an unlimited marketing budget as sales are not on the scale of VH days gone buy, so they will have been banking on the tour doing a lot of that promo work for them. With dates now canned, it becomes a tougher ask and calls a lot of things into question for them I guess.
In the UK the record has only scanned around 30,000 sales, so in effect, it's done here sadly.
A US indie store sent me the She's the Woman vinyl for just a few dollars - really love the artwork, hope Frosty get the same treatment as it is just a fantastic track. What a fight to get it right, For a minute of delight . . .Comment

Now since you can buy one song online as opposed to a whole album I would imagine single sales are huge. The great thing is you can choose yourself what single you want to buy. The singles were just the songs that were promoted for the radio stations to play. No! You can't have the keys to the wine cellar!Comment

Download single are huge, but only as marketing tools to get you to buy the full length album. As revenue raisers they are non existent. The whole point of a single in this day and age is to get people to buy the album. Its one of the many marketing tools. What a fight to get it right, For a minute of delight . . .Comment

So the release of singles may become MORE important in that the more casual listeners hear them te more likely they are to buy that song... And hopefully others along with it. But if they don't... At least being exposed to that one song or two songs etc will drive some sales... Thus I think it would be smart for bands whose reach has stalled or regressed to release more singles than they used to... Get radio play and get at least some sales off of the singles download.
But you are right... Singles are made to drive interest in the whole album. Always has been their purpose... But these days I would venture to guess most casual fans of bands DON'T buy entire albums but pick and choose. Why should they buy a whole album for 12 dollars when they can get the few songs they have heard and like for 3-4 bucks? The purchase and download of music these days is a double edged sword for artists.Last edited by RedEye; 06-11-2012, 07:45 AM.Comment
