Ralph Saenz is a great entertainer no doubt, saw him numerous times as part of the Atomic Punks, but c'mon - whether Dave can hit his notes right now or not due to too much strain on his vocal chords, your thought is laughable.
Dave is aware of the issues with his throat as someone here on the board pointed out that he was sucking on lemons backstage at the San Jose gig - this is one of the tricks singers use to lubricate their throat. He obviously did not want to cancel the last of the concerts and is a trooper to go on with the show to apease us all instead of handing us our refund... with less than a handful left, applaud him for the efforts.
IT's DAVE or the GRAVE... that is all.
I don't think lemons are the way to go and there are many things that can be done to help with lubrication, but what he needs is to use warming up techniques to strengthen everything, and there are many and they work. I know they do.......I wish the right person could speak to Dave to help with his voice. Damn he was so strong in 07/08.Comment

My mother went to see Rosemary Clooney a few years ago....said her voice was gone....she was eating spoonfulls of honey on stage to help her voice. I figured I would try it before a gig.....a shit load of honey with hot tea.....works like a charm. Smoking butts doesn't help either.....as I sit at my desk smoking a cig.....Comment

Obviously, smoking is so unhealthy in any number of ways that nobody should be picking up the habit in the first place anymore, but for someone who chooses to make a living with their voice, it's an especially bad move.
As much as we all despise Sammy Hagar, you have to admit, his voice is pretty much the same as it was in 1973. Probably a lot of that is the fact that he never smoked anything that wasn't green. Reportedly he was fairly fanatical about avoiding cigarette smoke, which is why he wanted a separate bus from the Van Halens even before either of them stopped drinking.
Of course preserving your voice only carries you so far when the lyrics you sing are complete shit.
