I'm a huge fan of both fans but I really don't believe Dave's side of the story there. I think it's more a case of him lot liking what he saw on the screen - not wanting to look weak (not that I think he did, but I can see how he would perceive it that way).

Mustaine is a legend and arguably the greatest metal guitar player of them all. But he's an insecure guy - reading his autobiography I was pretty shocked by that.

Tell The Truth stands as one of my all time faves, as well as Don't Piss Me Off, Goin places and many more. The Diamond Dave album is almost as bad as VH3
So it's not OK to dislike No Big 'Ting, but it's OK to dislike Diamond Dave, if you still want to call yourself a "true DLR fan"? Seems rather arbitrary to me.

I've said many times that I'm a classic VH fan first, DLR fan second. I'm definitely a die-hard classic VH fan. I'm not a die-hard DLR fan, as in, I wouldn't go to great lengths to see him personally, I don't have undying devotion towards him personally, and I don't care about his non-VH endeavors. Very little of his solo music truly excites me, thrills me the way that VH does.

I get the whole, "Hey it's Dave being Dave, how awesome is that!" thing. And I think it's great that ANY artist do whatever they please with complete disregard for what people expect from them. I appreciate that Dave was just being himself with No Big 'Ting but it's a shitty song, sorry.

While I've never been a Metallica superfan, I have liked more than a bit of what they've put out. The overall impression I got from watching Some Kind Of Monster was that by the time the film was made, Metallica had ran out of inspiration. It felt like the group was existing because it was a business, and the music was just product churned out Pro Tools-style to keep the money machine rolling.
Nothing that exceptional or revelatory there, but it was kind of sad to see a band that initially became successful despite not getting radio airplay and not playing the MTV music video game had morphed into a bunch of posers reliant on career coaches and therapists to make music.

Well I beg to differ Nige, you need to have a squiz of the lyrics my friend. A little ain't enough might just be Dave's defining statement in rock 'n' roll and in life.
The video, by the way, was parody plus and funny as hell, perhaps his best clip. Unfortunately Dave had been expanding during the 80's and the general public simply got left (or chose to stay) behind to "rock out" over Poison and Unskinny Bop etc. Catchy enough songs, but generic infantile lyrics and themes in comparison to Dave (and if you listen to the ALAE 1991 album you can hear that Dave tried his best to keep it simple.)
I felt sorry for the guy. He couldn't win. If he tried to re-create the CVH sound and feel he suffered with the comparison to the past. If he did his own thing he was just a wacky goofball movie star wanna-be grasping at the few last straws to stay in the spotlight.

For my two cents Alae is my fav Dave solo album, I think show time , dog town shuffle , drop in the bucket are songs that totally work for me ... I think Dave is on top form lyrically and Jason Becker is fan fucking tastic on it. I think he has The chops on it but he also plays with a lot of feeling ... Fuck it am listening to it in the car later .....god , pie , the whole routine :D
              fuck your fucking framing

I played ALAE almost as much as ADKOT this past Australian summer. I found it amongst a bunch of tapes and spun it in my car. But unfortunately the tape ran out at the end of Showtime

Clearly the ONLY "Blunder" of Roth's career, was not seeking career advice from the Syphiliss infected, molten nuthouse that passes off as the Roth Army.....

In retrospect, I think his biggest mistake was putting out the CFTH EP and the videos. While they were cool at the time and certainly made him a household name during that period, I think they cemented the pop culture image of him as a RnR clown that he hasn’t shaken.
Prob is he was probably about 5 years ahead of his time. MTV started experimenting with comedy format (I seem to remember Ben Stiller had some sort of show in the early 90s maybe…anyone recall that?) he might have been able to parlay that Picasso Bros stuff into something interesting. The idea of a feature length film still makes me cringe, but short format, particularly if worked into another credible show (like the Simpsons when they first started) could have worked (maybe).
Of course, had the rest of VH not totally fluked out with Hagar…
