Surely with todays technology it would be easy (for video editors) to restore the footage on blu ray and fix any of the technical problems that happened, as well as the lack of augmented lighting as JasonA stated above. As a 16 year old Australian who has never seen Van Halen yet (had tickets to soundwave Rev. but we all knew that was too good to be true) and is an absolute fanatic, I BEG EDWARD TO RELEASE THE FOOTAGE. Throw the 78, 79 shows and other 70s footage together on one release...Then the 1980 documentary that would "surpass The Who's "Kids are Alright" on another....and then finally the 1984 tour!! Something tells me Eddie would probably have to release a 2012 show, or the 2008 east rutherford show first to cement Wolfgangs existence in the band before any of the classic stuff was released, so until then we may never see any of the holy grail.

Most of the book is based on interviews with more than 400 people, including video directors, artists, record label execs, etc. In chapter 8, "Midgets, Models, And Trannies", there's mention of how the Oakland '81 videos came to be:

"Music videos drew a specific type of characters, brave and hardy men and women bent on exploration and merriment, people whose personalities -- and appetites, especially for drugs -- often rivaled those of the bands whose videos they made. In short, pirates, lunatics, outcasts, misfits, iconoclasts and barbarians.

ROBERT LOMBARD, producer: At first, Van Halen were very anti-MTV. They were getting pressure from the network to produce clips, but they didn't want to. They felt they were better than that. Van Halen's record label commissioned Bruce Gowers to shoot a concert, but the band wouldn't cooperate, so there was no augmented lighting onstage. I had my own independent production company, and they dumped the footage on me. It was hard to cut things together, but I worked with an editor to make a video for "Unchained", and the band loved it."
