      Interesting question.

I remember well. It was november 1987. Rainy night, i was a kid and was listening to the radio and was alone at father´s home. Suddenly a great riff intro and a groovy-rocky-punky vocal melody. Right on my face, "You Really Got Me". I didn´t know who the hell was The Kinks and nothin at all. When the song finish i phone to the radio questioning about the group that played that incredible song, told to the locutor that was my first time with Van Halen and the man gave me his congratulations and play once again the same song for me. Great memories.

And great chance to discover Van Halen universe.

Till today and on and on.

I think Dave was a top notch frontman because he had to add more than just a voice. The result was something unique. A lot more entertaining than Sammy.

Probably, but it was Templeman that wanted Sammy in.

On topic; first VH collection I heard was the BOV1 album in 96 and I've been hooked since.

And that's why Templeman signed them the first time he saw them...Because he wanted the rest of the band but wanted to shitcan Dave...and then he jumped the VH ship and went with Dave.

Bill Aucoin's words, not mine. Templeman has also been on record stating that he only wanted to sign Eddie.

Obviously Dave made a good impression on Ted over the years.

And this is the same Bill Aucoin who tried to dope up the singer from Midline and rape him? His words don't carry a lot of weight around here. Ask Sniper his opinion of Aucoin. I'm not trying to argue - far from it. But Bill Aucoin can suck dicks in Hell for all eternity and that piece of shit wouldn't have gotten his due even then.

I keep hearing this stuff about Sambo replacing Dave before Van Halen made their first album. I had to research because to me that never made any sense. Van Halen was the band on the sunset strip. Sammy was a veteran recording artist. I see the connection now. Ted Templeman produced Montrose and probably saw Van Halen with Sammy instead of Dave as a sure thing. I doubt they would have been called Van Halen. And the story that he really only wanted Eddie makes more sense now. However it came out like it did and we ended up with a band called Van Halen instead of Sammy having another guitarist carry him to superstardom. That ended up happening anyway but instead of it being The Sammy Hagar band featuring Eddie Van Halen they were called Van Halen. Too bad they didn't just call themselves Van Hagar.
On a side line, while looking up Bill Aucoin I came accross the Starz official page. This guy had the nerve to say only a handful of bands played hard rock in the late seventies and Starz was one of the bands. I guess he never heard of VH, Zeppelin or any of the other groups playing hard rock at the time.

At that time we had a military government, lot of music was banned, we had black and white TV.
When I was 13 years old, I was lucky to have discovered Kiss and Alice Cooper, here that was not music for girls, they liked Abba, and my boyfriends liked ELO; ELP, Deep Purple as the heaviest band.
We hadn´t any concerts and videos, also was very dangerous to know new people because of the communist guerrilla.
In 1978 when I was 15 years old I met a young boy who had travelled to USA, and bought VHI, and knowing that I was a Kiss and Alice Cooper fan, he played VHI on the record player for me, and I was floored, I rushed to the store and made import VHI, it wasn´t edited here. I was a kind of freak for my friends and their parents, because of my musical tastes, but I never cared, my mother always encouraged me to listen to new music, and I am sure she still remembers Dave.
