In the book that came with the KISS Boxed Set, Simmons mentions the fact that Ed and Alex played on the demos for three tracks: "Christine Sixteen", "Love For Sale" and "Tunnel Of Love”, with Frehley basically reproducing VH's guitar work on "Christine." Gene really wanted to include them on the set, but apparently the Van Halen camp refused.

      Tell you what.

If it had not been for Dave, VH could have sunk at any number of places.

Not saying he was the sole reason for their business success, but this is just one instance where his instincts were right on the money.

If the Sistaz had been left to their own devices, I don't think we would still have them around....

Couldn't agree with you more. And whatever success they had after Dave left was based on old merits.

According to Bill Aucoin, Ted Templeman wanted to get rid of Dave and replace him with Sammy Hagar. It might have been early band loyalty that didn't split Van Halen. Ironically a lack of loyalty and egos is what would split it up later.

I think Dave had to prove himself as a showman. His voice has always been his weak spot from a production point of view but wholistically in a live situation that's where Dave ruled and Aucoin was right, you had to see the band on their turf and in their element.

Dave was the band leader and also Dave's dad managed the band and helped them along. Not to mention providing a place to rehearse. No the Roth family were a big factor on getting Van Halen going. Once Dave survived the early weed out process at Warners and proved himself he was on his way. Ironically it was Ted Templeman that sided with Dave after he left Van Halen.

I don't think people realize how important a good manager is. Why Van Hagar worked was they got Sammy's manager Ed Leffler. He knew how to market that band. Look at the disaster it turned into when Ray Daniels came in. If Van Halen didn't get Ed Leffler I think they would have tanked and probably would be begging Dave to come back in.

I was always very fiercely protective of what we were doing as a group, as a clan, ’cause there’s always going to be pirates, there’s always going to be carpetbaggers, like Simmons. And I would show up with Ed at the studio. Simmons would look at me with horror. Horror. ’Cause I was on to his game way early.

Kiss with Eddie would have been the same except with better guitar solos.

In the Simmons 'produced' demos you can hear how he managed to suck the life out of Van Halen and Eddies playing compared to their club performances and replace it with Kiss style pop mediocrity.

It seems to divide people here about 50/50, I'm in the Kiss are over rated money grabbers camp, never was a big fan.

I find as I get older I like them less and it doesn't help that most days I usually have to endure 'Rock and Roll All Nite' and 'I was made for loving you' on the radio.

                      Insipid crap.

I can understand your view.I was made for loving you and Rock N' Roll all night (Throw Crazy Nights in there too) are played to death.Honestly I could not imagine Ed being a good fit for Kiss.I have not heard too much really early Van Halen but what I have heard his playing is very raw and full of balls.I am not great with the dates but it would be around Love Gun time right?.Ed's playing is a lot more ballsy than Ace's

Yeah, but if you really sit down and go through their catalog there are some really good songs hidden throughout their albums...
