1986: EVH on “5150” vs. Vai on “Eat ‘Em And Smile”
Kinda like when Dave went Vegas cornball with the Mamboslammers and a show not low on cheese. Or when we got us some country Dave when he headed down to Nashville to jump (sorry) on the coattails of that Strummin With the Devil Charlie Foxtrot. He started doing interviews down there and talking about how when "shit happens, we write songs about it". All the while employing a fey country bumkin accent. Then goes on Leno and anyone else who'd have him to perform that tripe while the world wondered what happened to him. The Boston Pops trainwreck was also part of the "Lost at Sea Dave" where he floated around aimlessly, his head bobbing up and down, up and down. Well he finally came to his senses about leaving, was able to get back in but father time had his way with him and his throat. Each night he vented his anger about this on poor unsuspecting "Dance the Night Away".
It's sounds almost blasphemous to say --- but "5150" is the one Van Haggis song I'd like to hear played live with Dave.
The guitar work alone would be worth it --- plus hearing Dave's "embellishments" on the tune.
That should have been their follow up to Panamas success had Dave been on vocals. A great video on MTV every 30 mins & the entire country cranking it from their cars at every 7-11 parking lot before school. Sadly it shows what Sammy did to it. Only hard core VH fans even know of the song and it never got any radio play back in 1986. And this from arguably the top rock band in the world at the time. A song of this caliber should not have been left to the wayside & faded into oblivion. It really should have had Dave to bring it to it's full glory potential. I really do think it had the foundation to be one of those legendary VH songs that everyone & their mother has heard of.
Even in 1986 when I didn't hate Sammy and I liked the entire album...in this song - which was my fav at the time - just sucked once the vocals started. Not that the vocals sounded bad, but they just didn't flow right & have the right vibe or anything. WTF is he singing about? A love line? I'll meet you half the way? New beginnings? Win or lose? Jesus Christ tomatoes the guy was all over the place with the typical 'cliche a day' calendar. The words just don't make sense and aren't easily singable by a casual fan.
“Great losses often bring only a numb shock. To truly plunge a victim into misery, you must overwhelm him with many small sufferings.”

I hate the guys lyrics, but I never had a problem with this songs words. He breaks no new ground with the particular sentiment of finding common ground with another person, but simplistically, he gets it done.
Beats the hell outta Dreams. "world turns black and white. Pictures in an empty room. Your love starts falling down. Better change your tune." Yeah, I'll get right on that. Dafuq?
1. C'mon, my man, Mr Big had great tunes.. It's too simple to only remember ballads. Evidence: Extreme.
2. Billy's a scientologist, ok. But He's a goddamn musician. Let's forget his religious thoughts and let's focus on the guy's musical abilities. Evidence: Chick Corea, Isaac Hayes...
3. No disrespect (you Know I wouldn't) but that comment of yours... I don't like it and I don't agree At All.
4. I Love Skyscraper, and I personally think it's a shame DLR disbanded THE BEST BAND IN THE WORLD.
You don't have to like my opinion, it's a message board. I don't really care what cultish, tax shelter "church" Billy is in too. And Isaac Hayes is a bad example after he quit South Park. I'm just saying Sheehan tried to come off as a purist badass with his criticisms of Skyscraper, and it just smacks of either hypocrisy or phoniness to anyone who watched them release a couple of acoustic "I wuv you so much" songs. Take your pick. I'm not taking anything away from them or him as musicians. Just give me a break on the bass-God who hates keyboards crap...

Who gives a fuck? I made this thing, called a point, that sailed directly over your oblong shaped head.
Dave never criticized anyone for doing Vegas shows or bluegrass music. HE CELEBRATED IT! Since you're a little of what we call "special," I'll spell it out for you. My point is about musicians being faux-purist dicks crowing about legitimacy, right before they bend over to put out a desperate power-ballad hit-ploy. Even in front of Van Halen Dave was a bit cornball, and God love him for it! And fuck any pretentious douchebag that takes himself seriously.
And don't you have a Journey concert to go to so you can meet your Filipino dreamboat backstage?
