That part of the book which from memory gets less than a page comes across as showing an ego out of control from Dave and someone lacking empathy.
'I can't believe he got that disease it was so inconvenient for me' kind of thing.

Maybe that's the fault of the ghost writer or just the way I interpreted it.

It did fit with my idea that rock stars are around 20 years less mature than proper people so when that book was written he was still a kid and now he's catching up with the rest of us...

Maybe Dave would not have had to become a Diplomaciac had Becker not gotten ALS

I don't recall that segment of the book being like that at all. Guess I'll have to read it a 9th time and see what I missed.

The bit I meant wasnt really aimed at Becker , he mentions guitarist not actually owning their own gear and people wanting more money half way through a tour ... I think he was talking about the people after Becker .

Was that really Dave's attitude about Becker's illness? I havent read CFTH for over 10 yrs. so I can't recall. Seems kinda douchey if it's true.

Also thought it was immature for not mentioning Pete Angelus in the entire book. Maybe they parted ways on bad terms, but at least acknowledge working with the guy and his contributions to the VH story.

Nah, that wasn't it at all.

Like Vandeleur said, that part was about guitar players AFTER Becker.

With Becker, he just skirted around the issue, I had the feeling it wasn't something he'd be comfortable talkin' about. I probably wouldn't be comfortable with it, either.

                No, not probably. I'm not.

I have a good friend who's been going through something similar the past few years, and... yeah.

                Cheers! :bottle:

IIRC, Roth had nothing but praise for Becker...

And a lot of disdain for guitarists who (loosely paraphrasing) didn't have their shit together.

Why settle for something you have, if it's not as good as something you're out to get?

Barney's got my CFTH... but i remember Dave said things like 'so good, you couldn't hear the influences anymore' and 'a couple of summers from being one of the all-time greats' i'm paraphrasing too; but i believe he had nothing but high praise for Jason, and was genuinely devastated when the diagnosis came in.

Vastly underrated album. Then again, much of the media seemed intent on tearing him (as a solo act) down.

So I dug out my copy of ALAE after reading the birthday wishes here at the Army. Other than the occasional song on Pandora, I haven't listened to the entire album in awhile, so it was interesting hearing it again with the hindsight of ADKOT, Diamond Dave, DLR Band, etc. to compare it to. And... damn, I forgot how much fun this album is! From the opening chord of A Lil' Ain't Enough to the groovy jam that ends 'Drop In A Bucket,' I had a blast revisiting this piece of DLR history. While I still think it is overly long (even now I can't help feeling that he could have trimmed a couple of tracks to make it a tighter album), I was pleasantly reminded of how good his voice sounded in '91. At the time I distinctly remember thinking his voice sounded worse from Skyscraper to this album - but hearing it now my ears have a new appreciation for his vocals. His pipes were still a long way from being rusty like they were on YFLM and the '96 BOV1 tunes, and not as ragged (in a good way) like they were on DLR Band. The music is tight, Jason Becker shreds, and Dave's lyrics are straight out of... take your pic: the funny pages, comic books, fortune cookies, horoscopes, front page news, porno mags, etc. Going to give this a few more spins to savor the parade Dave was bringing that year while his former bandmates were churning out the rain like this:

Yeah, I been in debt from conception
I pay for the rest of your life
As long as I remember, bills have looked me in the eye

You can have it now but ya gotta pay for it later. Oh!
Work me out, the payment's cleared
Now you're workin' for the man. Yeah

They gotcha goin' in. They gotcha comin' out
Same amount, woo! In 'n out

Ain't no way 'round the system
Money make this world go round
All the way, they got you down

Stay and add it up or throw yourself out a window. Oh!
Might cost you less to stick around
One more payment. Lay it down, on the ground

Well, they gotcha comin' in, they gotcha goin' out
Same amount, woo! In 'n out
                        Oh!
My karma just ran over your dogma.

Dave said he cried in his book when that verdict came down. Holmes was a good last second choice, but I think he along with other members of that tourinig band were all over dave about money. I bought tickets but it got cancelled here.

                            Fuck Pete Angelus.

He dropped Dave as a top priority like a hot potato the very minute things started to go south, and quickly latched on to the Black Crowes coattails, in Dave's time of need. He was a piece of shit in the end. No loyalty for Dave, who made him who he was.

I bet Angelus tells the story differently.

                              Who knows?

Album should have been the follow up EEAS. Becker was an amazing player. Just a record that was really ill suited for the time it came out which is a shame and to me makes it a forgetten gem.
