      Van Halen's Bad Habits
Eddie spills beans on biggest myths surrounding the 70s rock legends

Van Halen will be here for the Stone Music Festival and guess what, Eddie (guitar) and Alex Van Halen (drums) spoke to Triple M's Grill Team. Right away, The Grill Team played a bit of fact or fiction with the 70s rock legends.

Eddie is it true your dad gave you a shot of vodka and a cigarette when you were 12-years-old to help combat nerves?

"Yes, to help calm my nerves. Worked for him and worked for me for a lot of years, but those days are over now. I quit smoking and quit drinking about five or six years ago. There goes the neighbourhood!," laughed Eddie.

Alex, you are an ordained minister?

"I don't promote it but I don't deny it," said Alex. "I'm in a rock band so you have to take everything with a grain of salt."

Van Halen are actually the band KISS without make-up?

"I think we're much better looking," laughs Alex.

Of course, Van Halen hit Australia this April with the old dog, David Lee Roth on vocals. Is it good to have Diamond Dave back in the band?

"It's like you walk into the studio and we haven't been together for a while and there's this overwhelming sense of 'coming home'. That's the best way I can describe it," said Alex.

"All the time we were apart was if it hadn't existed and we picked up the fisti-cuffs right away," laughed Alex. "It's like a pair of jeans that just fit right."

Eddie's son Wolfgang has been playing bass in the band for the past seven years, after repalcing orginal bassist Michael Anthony in 2006.

"Of course it's exciting, and he keeps us young," laughed Eddie of having his son in the band.

Added Alex: "It's good to have a different perspective on the music we recorded 35 years ago. We're really happy the music has stood the test time and I think having a different generation involved with it gives us a different perspective."

We cannot wait to see them at the Stone Music Festival on the 20th and 21st of April. Get your tickets here.

Nice to see the Australian press asking some different stuff from the normal drivel questions for the band... and hear some different answers. Almost like someone is actually doing some homework much more than the lazy US media who ask the same questions ad nausium...

This must be another new era for the band... they are actually doing press and promoting things this time around!! And all of them...

That was actually a popular rumor in the late 70s and early 80s. Though I never bought into it myself. Both groups may have had a Jewish lead singer and a Dutch guitar player, but that's pretty much where the similarities end. Even on the Gene Simmons produced "Zero" demos, there's no way that Van HALEN ever sounded remotely like Kiss.

Or looked like them either, for that matter.

I was just about to be critical of the brothers for not doing any media for Stone and leaving it all to Dave. It's good to see Eddie and Alex talking with Australia's most popular mainstream radio station and this will generate more interest. An Eddie interview and in-depth feature in the Sydney Morning Herald would really make an impact. A lot of people here are probably still not aware that this is even happening.

Yeah I'm not happy about the cost - that's for sure. Then I bought tickets and thought, what if they do a stand-alone tour! If they do I'm prepared to accept that now. But that's what they should have done...played each major city at the various arenas with a strong support act. I think Kiss and Motley Crue are doing that.

By the way, Soundwave was held in Adelaide a few weeks ago, with Metallica headlining...it was a 40,000 sell-out. Amazing for a city with a record for slow concert ticket sales. And Kiss and Motley Crue were playing the same day...about 30,000 at their after Clipsal 500 race show. Soundwave is now Australia's most popular festival. VH should have stuck with them.

Ah hell... we catch every little fart in the pool and know exactly where the mainstream could be clued in and informed...

Why does this all have to be a treasure hunt with no map and a clueless adventure at every turn... I mean... gawd damn it!!! This is Van "FUCKING™" Halen... after this many years why be coy about it all... just posture and serve it up right in your fucking face... and be done with it. Y'all have fucked around for so many years... enough already... just deliver and get 'er done!! We all know who's fucking who... get on with it... and quit acting like it's some damn big surprise... Frankly that shit is getting old.

We've got live VH in a little more than 3 weeks.

                        That's pretty fucking exciting.

Wonder if there will be any switch-ups from the set list staples of '12.

That would be too cool. Remember when somebody streamed part of one of the shows last year? It didn't matter that only a few minutes streamed - it was just fookin' awesome that we were seeing it live. DDE should hook us up with a live stream straight from the feed going to the onstage screen...
