The first 30 seconds are a hell of a hook, then it kind of lulls in the first verse - then the 2nd verse gets better and @ 1:47 it is w/o question The Amazing CEVH @ on par with his best work and the band really grooves with him .. slight lull again , the the end is just great - oh Jimmy !!!

The one Van Halen song I never liked.

Aww I like that song. Thought it was a great treat in 2007 and was one of Daves vocal high points. Also love the little drum thing Alex does.

Nope, sorry... When I first saw it on MTV, my exact words were "what the FUCK is this shit"??

I eventually warmed up to Jump because of the guitar solo in the middle, which literally embodied the lyric "You got to roll with the punches (cheesy synthesizer crap) to get to what's real"

To this day, it's the synthesizers which prevent me from ranking 1984 as an equal to the first 4 Van HALEN albums. Diver Down also doesn't make the cut, because more than half of it's mere 33 minutes were cover songs, and good covers though most of them were, it's still a bit excessive. As far as I'm concerned, ADKOT was "the long awaited followup to Fair Warning".

JUMP still makes me cringe in an uncomfortable disgust - even at sports arena's when I hear it I get a negative reaction to it - CVH is so damn good - when I hear JUMP - the 1 song with Dave that is so BAD it makes my skin crawl ... horrible horrible song

Glad CD's/mp3's came out - I can program the thing out of the playlist instead of having to turn off the auto setting on the record player and place the needle right after the damn thing to listen lol!

Ed used a great Tone for the Synths .. any sharper and it would be grating - like YES's 90125 - too bright

lyrically it tells a great tale too imho

You've got me captured, I'm under your spell I guess I'll never learn I have your picture, yes I know it well Another page is turned
Are you for real? It's so hard to tell From just a magazine Yeah, you just smile and the picture sells Look what that does to me
I'll wait till your love comes down I'm coming straight for your heart No way you can stop me now As fine as you are
I wrote a letter and told her these words That meant a lot to me I never sent it, she wouldn't have heard Her eyes don't follow me And while she watches I can never be free Such good photography

I'll wait till your love comes down I'm coming straight for your heart No way you can stop me now As fine as you are
You can't imagine what your image means The pages come alive Your magic greeting everyone who reads Heartbreak in motor drive

you guys are dissing the song NOW!
But when it was released we all LIKED the song....even if it was for a short period of time
Hell it is no where near my favorite CVH tune, but it did hook me for a while, for me I'll Wait has always been the weakest link on 1984
Jump is no cruising tune, its no workout tune, but man can it get a crowd going, regardless of where and when the tune is played and that's why its a good song......

                    .

About Jump...oddly I had the exact same words....but a totally different inflection to them like Dave mentions in his recent taping.

What the fuck is this shit!! OMG! These guys are awesome!!!

All I had seen before this was the Unchained video & it never really resonated in me. The Jump video I was mesmerized by Dave & Eddie. Could not get enough of them.

I'll admit that the song has an appeal that was much broader than perhaps a lot of Van Halen's music up to that point contained.

For what I enjoyed best about Van Halen, though, Jump didn't really rock my boat too much. Much of that had to do with Ed being such a fantastic guitar player (and not just in terms of his solos, either) that I really didn't want to hear the band taking on synth-heavy material. I'm not opposed to synthesizers, but there's really little of distinction that Van Halen did with them to my ears that made me think "wow, this kind of stuff warrants Ed putting his guitar aside".

In reality, commercially Jump is CVH's high-water mark, and the song will undoubtedly be performed as long as the band continues to tour. It's just never represented a particular point of greatness to me as far as my own personal tastes re: Van Halen music went...and this isn't a case of revisionism on my part (I wasn't huge on the song when it first came out and am now saying something different - why bother lying about such things? I say what I think when it comes to Van Halen without hesitation or wondering if others here will agree with it). Overall, Van Halen are (at least when Roth was/is involved) one of a short list of groups where there are very few tracks in their catalog that I don't have any use for. That's why I like the band so much. However, that's not to say I went ga-ga over overy single thing they ever did, and Jump is just a case in point.

Despite many people disliking "Jump" because of the poppy synth sound --- I think the song succeeds simply because it embodies the CVH ethos --- which is "Roll with the punches to get to what's real".

Van Halen is labeled as a "party band" --- but I think Dave's lyrics always painted a world view of acknowledging pain and misery in life while keeping an optimistic attitude about it. A song like "Jamie's Cryin" has a very upbeat tempo but the lyrics are about a girl who keeps getting used and can't find true love. That's what CVH was all about --- you take the good and bad and keep rollin'.

I think Dave said something once about "You can have a great time without smiling once". That is the spirit of CVH in a nutshell.
