... All I remember were guitar players I knew listening over and over to that Mean Street intro to just try and get the slightest insight into what Ed was doing, and saying, OK, I really have no fuckin idea what the hell that is.
Tapping

Around 1996 when I picked up the US Festival on VHS, I watched him play that intro during his solo section and after a lot of viewings I finally got a handle on it, at least in terms of the technique and fret positions.
That's a tough thing to play well, though. Much tougher than Eruption. I chip away at it here and there and still couldn't say I have it down well. Probably explains why you didn't see/hear too many Eddie wannabes playing it.Scramby eggs and bacon.Comment

I've seen him play it and still have no fucking idea what he is doing. Man is a genius."Bumper sticker on my rocket's ass: go home, the earth is full." DLRComment

Like someone said Ed didn't invent tapping but he perfected it.
In addition to being a great song writer Ed also invented or perfected many things related to tapping, harmonics, whammy bar usage (e.g. dive bombs), and a combination of those things."Bumper sticker on my rocket's ass: go home, the earth is full." DLRComment

Yes I know Steve Hackett was doing it before Eddie, but this is from 1965 -

I was really cuntfused by your posts there but I get it now.
First up I'm a fan of Queen, liked them for many many years and like Brian May.
I had to watch the BH video again there which is mad considering I must have seen it a thousand times.
What we have here is a misunderstanding, you I think, don't play the guitar which is maybe where it comes from.
At first I was thinking tapping in the solo of BH how did I miss that? It's a great solo but no I think you are meaning on the outro at 5:17ish.
At that point Brian taps the string a couple of times with his right finger so you kind of have a point but he doesn't do it fretting a note so it's more a stylistic thing more for the video than anything else. Otherwise you would have a totally incongruous high note ringing out there or a tapped harmonic.
It's not tapping in the way that people mean in this thread and wouldn't be annotated as such when transcribed on sheet music.
And calm down.
I wish Brian May was here, he's a modest guy and would be the first to say he was influenced by Eddie Van Halen on the A Kind of Magic album.
Wow this is so like being back in the school playground I'm absolutely sure I had this argument 25 years ago...Last edited by Seshmeister; 07-13-2013, 08:35 PM.Comment

Amazing coincidence that Brian May started sounding like this soon after recording with Eddie Van Halen.

I remember Rustoffa had a vid of some jazz guy from the 50's who was tapping.
There's an interview floating around somewhere where Ed and Brian May are talking about the solo on It's Late. (what a brilliant song and solo).Comment
