If Dave voice stayed strong like back in the day...

With his signature screams & yells wonder what kind of negative BS would critics still have to say about him now?

Which brings me to this, how is it that for Dave to always since back in the day be in to physical fitness of all things he let his voice go?

DLR's indifference to his vocal talents will always be one of the great mysteries around here. He looks great for his age. He sounds...

Think it's too many years of smoking cigarettes, plus just natural effects of aging. I mean, far as the high-end banshee shrieking wail, if you listen to boots chronologically, even by the time the 1984 tour rolled around the strength and intensity of that vocal effect was beginning to show signs of wear and tear in comparison to boots from 1978 and 1979, when Roth could perform that vocal effect over and over again night after night with seemingly no difficulty.

I think Dave's voice sounded the best on some of the EEAS demos. It had a raw, almost cutting edge to it. Then it went down hill from there. Well, as far as the high stuff and the screams go. But that's gonna happen to anybody as the years go by. Especially a heavy smoker like Dave. The worst part about Dave's voice now is that he can still pretty much sing all of the back catalog. IF he'd quit doing that fucked up screeching. And if they had somebody on backing vocals that could hit those old high notes and whose voice naturally blended well with Dave's, that would fill in and help fill out his vocals you'd hardly notice that he's lost a step or two, well, except for the screams. Now, there is this guy I know about who could do the job. And I'm pretty sure he knows all the old stuff...

Like all of you, I would love to see David use his natural register again. And maybe it's cause I'm a chick, but every time he lets loose the scream on As Is and HBSD the hair on the back of my neck and my arms stand straight up ( just like it does on HAIL). Then when he starts talking about ruining my reputation... well...

Yeah...notsomuch. Am with vandeleur on this one.

Whatever the bands level of ability is now is what it is. I'm not interested in seeing Van Halen live playing along in front of background singers (much less an offstage ringer who can nail the screams of old - if it comes to that, might as well use bites of Dave's old recorded screams and let Roth mime them, and how ghey would that be?)...I give them the concession of pre-recorded keyboards mostly because I don't really care much for those tunes anyway, but the rest of the live show should rely on whatever the four guys can produce from their own instruments live on the spot.

I don't know man...but when listen to Steel Panther doing Van Halen covers it is almost like listening to Dave in his prime. I know Panther has a lot of fans for the humor that they are all about but those guys are seriously talented and perhaps the best Van Halen covers I have ever heard.

Hi Guys, he can but for some reason he won't , if i could be his private voice coach im sure i could make him understand what's wrong for us the fans.
Sometimes fans knows more than the artist about details and small things, they do not care as we do. I suspect he is singing higher because
his voice breaks a lot on his natural register, he tried his best around 2002 for the hagar tour, then he did great for the 2006-7 era.
It's long, but i know what he could do to get his voice back in shape. He still has the classic scream since it's not his voice, its a whistle harmonic, he has it "hidden".
Check him in Japan 2004, he had it , but it comes and goes. Long story, very long story, i wish i could coach him.

for sure. Ralph's voice is super strong and he can do Dave better than anyone. I saw them 4-5 times when they were doing Atomic Punks. was amazing. like this...

Wow. That amp sounds great! Kudos to the guy playing. It's more in the fingers than the amp if you are doing Eddie. The guy nails it pretty damn close.

Dave was never a great singer. He made up for that with showmanship and his famous elk mating call like screams. He can't move and scream like he did anymore. The man is trying but age is taking it's toll. I think he knows it. I sense he's antsy to get some shows and songs done before it just becomes impossible. I don't think the Van Halens quite see it that way. I think Al and Ed think they can play until they drop. Probably they can. Singing voices are always the weak leak and yeah, smoking don't help.

I think the Van Halen's would like nothing more than for Dave to be the one to call it a day. That would give them an easy out.....

If his voice held up maybe we wouldnt have been subjected to his ridiculous floor routine. Dave, hang up the ballerina slippers, walk away with a shred of dignity. Please.
