IMO the next Van Halen album would have gone #1 regardless of who was singing, but if Dave was at the helm it could have been as big as 1984 or even bigger. As the surviving the grunge, Van Halen with roth could have probally survived the grunge considering KISS did well with Revenge. On top of that, EVH was Cobain's idol growning up or w/e.

You know, IMO, I think it's kinda hard to tell...but throughout the late 80s and into the early 90s, a lot of rock bands did well enough holding their heads above water (Aerosmith and the Power-Ballads-To-Sales formula did well, the aforementioned Kiss and others). I've no doubt that their staying power would have been there, but sales may (or may not) have suffered. Sadly, the world will never quite know...

It is becoming pathetic at the links how the Van Hagar fans are idiots and believing their own bullshit. I am just so sad I want to cry. Of course Van Halen was better with David Lee Roth but we have Sammy now and its better than nothing. I just love the thought of taking Sams cock in my ass every time I hear Up For Breakfast. Sammy wrote that song about having a big cock in the morning and I think he wrote it for me and how I love cock.

Its ridiculous to insinuate that CLASSIC VAN HALEN wouldn't have made it far after 1984. They were on the rise, hitting their musical stride. If the egos could have been contained for the next record, who knows what effect that much adulation would have had upon the parties involved. I believe that Dave would have wanted to continue upon the musical journey that we have all come to know and LOVE! The brothers, passing upon that journey, would have done exactly as they have, AND TURNED THE BAND INTO JOURNEY!!!!

There's an idea...when eddie and shemp replace hagar next time, maybe they can get Steve Perry to be their lead singer!

If you ask any Spam fan they'll have their take on how Roth would not have been able to carry the torch and that Sam brought new life to VH. He did? According to popularity, every Van Hagar record sold less and less each time out and people were so fed up in 98 that the string of Platinum sales were over!

Someone please educate these idiotic Spammy fans in what Van Halen would have been instead of these moron's always looking into that useless crystal ball they have about Roth and VH and what would have been! They just don't get it! They never will!

The ONLY reason that 5150 was successful was a) because of the momentum that VH had accumulated up until that point and b) the success of 1984. Van Hagar would have been no more or less popular than the novelty band 'The Firm' with Jimmy Page if it wasn't for DLR. That's a fact.

Actually, I remember looking at the links sometime last year, and somebody had actually started a thread in regards to "How about Steve Perry as lead singer?".

....fuck it, you do the math on that one...

damn right Bueno bob! I've been sayin' it from my first listen to 5150. That would complete the metomorphsis from Van Halen the #1 hard rock band in the land to the most sisified band ever! It blows the mind to think, after all the early disdain for Journey expressed by Dave and the brothers, that the Lying Dutchmen secretly LONGED to be IN Journey. And Spammy only aided them in ruining a once proud band.

It would be a better choice than your butt buddy DLR.

Well, that leads me to consider what it would've sounded like if Van Halen played "Yankee Rose", or "Elephant Gun"... well, Mikey couldn't play that, but maybe "Goin' Crazy"... Probably would've been fuckin' great, huh... EEAS = 7th VH Album.

See i have to disagree with you a little EngineRoom. I totally agree that your reasons are why Van Hagar took off but I think the still sold CDs after that on their own merits since a lot of users here punched out after 5150. the audience changed and basically did a 180 but i think van hagar does stand on its own, if you do ignore the past and start that band like it was something new
