I was really into car audio during my 20's (1989 to 1999). My first system in 1989 was a total of around $400 and was just a Sony head unit with internal 20W x 4 channel amp and some Pioneer 3-way 6x9 speakers for the rear fill. No external amp or subs, but it was a nice way to get started in the hobby since I wired everything myself and so I learned the basics about polarity, grounds, etc. However, I must have had a short circuit because the Sony deck burned out 3 times and then I junked it.
My 2nd and final system got installed in 1995 for a total of $4,000 and it was the system I always wanted -- (2) 200-watt amps to drive the front and rear Diamond Audio speakers, 1000-watt sub amp, (3) 12" JL Audio subs, and a Pioneer double-DIN head unit and Sony 10-CD changer. Also had a 15-band EQ/crossover and a 8V line driver to boost the input signal to the amps. That fucking system was LOUD and CLEAN, and as everyone knows all the CVH tunes sound better when they make your eardrums pulsate for hours. Got a couple tickets for breaking the local noise ordinance, but it was worth it. You only get to be a dumb kid once in your life. NEVER played rap on it, except for the Biggie Smalls CD a couple times because my girlfriend at the time liked it.
