    Telepromter

Remember a few yrs back when Dave was reading lyrics from off the drum riser that got everybody upset?

Well if you check out YT alot of bands, singers and even rappers have been using teleprompters but no one has said a word. Dave reads lyrics to one song and people flipped?!

What he should do next tour for the deeper cuts is have a prompter set up.

    Thoughts?

In the old days Dave just used to go "I forgot the fucking words!". Then he would blame the fuck up on drinking real whiskey and not iced tea like The Clash.

The next thing is just having holograms up there. We are going to have robots and drones fighting our wars. Sex robots. Hell let's have fake entertainers too.

I remember flipping a bit about that because it seemed as though he was overly relying on the piece of paper on the drum riser and it just looked bush league. If I'm not mistaken, the song was Hang 'em High. The song has about 6 lines, some of which repeat. I doubt it was sprung on him ten minutes before show time that he'd better have that song down. I don't say no to the teleprompter idea, but for the ticket price, this particular Toastmaster General should only glance sparingly IMHO. If Ed can relearn all of the guitar parts...

With the way shows are filmed now you be surprised who has prompters. Sometimes the cameras accidentally pan by them when filming from the side and behind the bands etc..

Was checking out U2 from Glastonbury and guess what the camera caught. And it was I will follow, one of their staple songs which he should know all the words to.

It seems to be an age thing. Towards the end Sinatra was using a Teleprompter for 'My Way'.

As far back as WACF I remember Dave saying that he never listened to anything the band released after it was finished recording and mixing - couldn't stand listening to himself. And given that there are no lyrics printed inside those early albums, I can imagine he'd have a problem remembering what the damn words to 'Hang 'Em High' - or whatever - were ... unless they were playing the tune every night.

You'd hope that in those cases he might go back and listen to the record, but I suspect he got a roadie or some assistant to write out the words for him.

Oh Eddie and Dave bullshitted a lot in the early days. They would lock themselves away out of the public eye and work their asses off. Michael Anthony even said they hired professional choreographers to help with the stage show. He said those photos of Sunset Sound with all the beer cans and hamburger wrappers were staged.

The act was you would hide. Do everything to make sure the music and show was stellar and then pose as a bunch of misfits in public that didn't know the lyrics or listen to the songs and just freewheeled it every night. The truth is they worked their asses off and a lot was calculated for effect.

the thing is the older I get and the more I see, the more I realize everything is fucking staged. LOL! Shakesphere was on the mark when he said all the world is a stage. Even more so now with our mass media.

Teleprompters are pretty standard for acts now, particularly older acts with tons of songs. Stones use them. Ozzy certainly does. Rob Halford has been singing with his head down for the last two tours.

Elvis pulled out a copy of the lyrics [My Way] onstage once also. Used to find it on youtube but couldn't just now when I searched.

... but he only used them for the first verse or so.

So does this mean that Sid Vicious - wacked out of his mind on heroin - was the only one who managed to sing "My Way" without reading written lyrics???

granted, he did improvise a few things.... I'm reasonably certain that the original lyrics don't say "I killed a cat", for instance, but at least he did it from memory.
