The following is the last three Van Halen albums and their first week of sales:
BOV1 (2 new Roth tunes) - 233,000 units sold
Van Halen 3 (Cherone) - 190,000 units sold
BOBW (3 new Hagar tunes)- 138,000 units sold
The amazing thing is VH3 and BOBW had a lot more going for them then BOV1, but yet, BOV1 on the strength of only 2 new Roth songs, was the only one to debut at NO.1 and sold much more than the others. BOV1 has sold 3 million compared to about only 500,000 for VH3. By these numbers BOBW should sell even less than VH3.
VH3 was supported by a tour and it was an album full of new songs.
BOBW is supported by a so-called 'blockbuster reunion' tour and has 3 new songs with the 'legend' Sammy Hagar. TV commercials are all over the place and you get 2 CD's for almost the price of one at most places. What sheep could resist that?
BOV1, on the otherhand, was severely handicapped.
Take into account:
There was no tour to support BOV1.
David Lee Roth openly said do not buy the record.
There was an internet boycott of the record.
The video was canceled for MWM.
Bad blood between Roth and Warner meant very little ad support from Warner.
But, basically, people did not want to honor the boycott. The lure of 2 new songs with Roth was just too great. This album sold pretty much on word of mouth and sold almost twice as much as BOBW has in it's first week.
The numbers speak loud and clear:
3 million have bought BOV1. 500k have bought VH3 and even less will buy BOBW.
The conclusion:
Van Halen is nothing without David Lee Roth
