VAN HALEN Was 'The Heroin Of Rock For Me'

STEEL PANTHER's MICHAEL STARR: VAN HALEN Was 'The Heroin Of Rock For Me'

Mark Weiss of RockScene.com recently conducted an interview with vocalist Michael Starr of Los Angeles glam-metal jokesters STEEL PANTHER. You can now watch the chat below.

Speaking about his early musical influences, Starr said: "For me, when VAN HALEN came out, that started the heavy metal of the '80s as I know it today. David Lee Roth, Eddie Van Halen… it was awesome, man. And I would study those videos and just, like… I watched 'Jump' probably four or five thousand times back in the day on MTV. And every now and then, [if you were] watching MTV, you [would] have to watch TRIUMPH or THE FIXX to get to VAN HALEN, which was a bummer… It's all these other stupid bands… But I love that stuff. That was, like, the main artery… That was, like, the heroin of rock for me — VAN HALEN."

Starr — real name Ralph Saenz — was the lead singer for the David Lee Roth-era VAN HALEN tribute band ATOMIC PUNKS from May 1994 to December 2008 (where he performed under the name David Lee Ralph). He was also briefly the lead singer for L.A. GUNS, with whom he recorded the "Wasted" EP.

STEEL PANTHER is currrently supporting JUDAS PRIEST on a North American tour. The trek kicked off on October 1 in Rochester, New York and will run through mid-November, wrapping up in Tacoma, Washington.

STEEL PANTHER's third album, "All You Can Eat", sold around 13,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release to land at position No. 24 on The Billboard 200 chart. The CD arrived in stores on April 1 via Open E/KLS.

        Does that include iTunes numbers?
Why settle for something you have, if it's not as good as something you're out to get?

It's a broad market... but it shows people still record, produce and sell albums today. Just no instant millionaires from a single record release.

As much as folks want to say the music industry is dead... there's a lot of people earning a decent living from it. If they're willing to get off their lazy asses and work...

To put it in perspective, there has been exactly ONE platinum album released so far in 2014, in any genre. That is the Taylor Swift album that just came out.

Not even the Country shitkickers that think CD's are the latest greatest thing that has just come out, have had a platinum album in 2014.

Rock isn't dead. The music industry as a whole is dead.

Ray told me a girl in line at one of their meet and greets, asked him to sign a CDR copy of their most recent album, BEFORE it had been released!

Too many people are stealing the music these days.

No! No! No! The appeal of the music business was you could drop out of school, have minimal talent, work a few gimmicks and lounge around banging chicks, being high all the time, and living a life of no real work and debauchery while the rest of the people who played by the rules worked their asses off for The Man making less than you do. Between getting laid and doing lines of coke you made songs in a studio and they went on records and those sold by the millions and it supported your lazy ass lifestyle.

Yup. People will still buy your music but the thieves cut into the profit margin. As ZZ said you can make a living in music but you just have to work harder for it because of leakage (theft).

Saw an article on that this morning. The version sold at Target has extra tracks, and that version alone sold more than the latest Coldplay disc.

Their new album isn't very good.. that may have something to do with it. I just saw them with Priest at the Hard Rock here. Steel Panther puts on a great show.

Actually, I found their new album better than their second release. Both of them are solid though.
