Ed and Dave are vets in the music world and fame. If you asked me, Ed knows exactly where Dave is and they talk more than people let on and he just gave that answer which would not put him on the spot to answer questions which includes Dave without him being there. Damn sure they can reach each other by cell phone at a moment's notice. It is not like they do not trust each other, or Dave would not have done the artwork or selected the show for the new LP. Saying I do not know where he is, is a great way to avoid routine questions of the "how are you guys doing" routine without getting in depth with all the drama the media likes to elaborate on... and I think you are exactly right, things do come together quickly because it is freaking rock and roll and not the Vienna Symphony rehearing Mozart or Beethoven

I highly doubt there's as much direct contact between Dave and the Van Halens as you suggest...

First off judging by the productive output of the band the last 20+ months... there wasn't any need for them to talk. Nothin happening... nothin to talk about.

Odds are when something comes up for the 3 Old Farts™ to discuss... Ed has his peg-boy Bruck call Roth's personal assistant and something is scheduled. Either a phone call depending on where they are or a face-to-face if they're on the same continent.

If those tapes still exist they probably are ampex 456 grand master... if that is true then those tapes are notorious for "shedding" which requires them to be "baked" and then they can be played without the oxide and backing "shedding" off usually ONE time..Videotape is worse because the helical scanning heads can become clogged with flaking/shedding oxides..
