ABERDEEN 1978 - The Brothers and Dave share stories

It seems the brothers and Dave had different memories about Aberdeen.

    MAY 19th, 1978 - ABERDEEN, SCOTLAND
    (2012)
    - DLR Interviewing Van Halen

EVH: Let me ask you a question. Do you remember where we were when we found out our first album went gold?
    DLR: Aberdeen, Scotland..
EVH: That’s right (Alex, Ed and Dave laugh) – What happened? And what happened there!? What happened there? After the gig?
    DLR: Uh… I don’t recollect.
EVH: Oh Man! We were doing human pyramids. An trashed the hotel. We took shoe polish and wrote our logo all over the walls and stuff, and the next morning the cops came!? And they searched the..
DLR: I don’t remember! (Busts out laughing)
AVH: They escorted us out of the country. And don’t come back..
EVH: They escorted us out of the country! But for what reason? Not because we wasted their hotel!
    DLR: Why? I don’t..
EVH: Because one of our crew stole a pillow!
    DLR: (Laughs)
EVH: They searched every bus. And they.. And all we were saying, “All we were saying is, Come on! Will somebody cough up the damn pillow!” And nobody coughed it up! And they escorted us!
DLR: This sounds vaguely familiar! Like Rudy or something!! (laughs)
EVH: They escorted us! They escorted us to the border!
AVH: Actually it was Douglas Alexander..
EVH: Yeah. Yeah. The Sound guy.
EVH: But they escorted us to the border. And don’t ever come back! And we never went back!
DLR: Very familiar! I remember the pillow! Somebody had swiped the thing. YES!
EVH: And we were all scared shitless because we thought they were going to nail us for the damage to the hotel. It was just the damn pillow.
    DLR: I remember this.
EVH: I thought that was hilarious!
DLR: I remember we drank Glenmorangies. I remember singing the lines over and over again, it was a tune wedgie and I couldn’t get it out of my head. You take the high road, and I’ll take the low road, and we’ll all drink the Glenmorangie!!!! YOU TAKE THE HIGH ROAD AND I’LL TAKE THE LOW ROAD!!! (Laughs) in volume. You know? And I remember singing that all night as we marched around and whatever.

When Van Halen got its first gold record, we were on tour with Black Sabbath all over England, Scotland, Ireland, many, many cities. And it was in Aberdeen, just a very small provincial little hotel where they didn’t even really have a bar. They would serve drinks in the lobby. It was almost a bed-and-breakfast kind of thing. That very night I was introduced by the Warner Brothers representative to one of the finest beverages. You know the body absorbs cool liquids faster than warm ones, and this is the coldest liquid I had ever known. It was Glenmorangie Malt Whisky. I rewrote the song that night, “You take the high road and you take the low road, and I’ll take the Glenmorangie.” It was our first gold record. And we celebrated and drank and celebrated and drank a little bit more to pour on the celebration.

I went back to my hotel room and woke up in the middle of the night with an ungrateful stomach, and made a Flo Jo dash for where I thought the bathroom still was. “Still” being the operative word in the description, based on last night’s hotel-not tonight’s. I was a man on a mission. I jumped out of bed, slammed right into a wall, turned around, smashed right into the lamps, knocked a picture off the wall, thrashed around, destroyed my stereo, knocked the television over, barely made it to the bathroom. Got sick-like gloriously, gloriously sick-forgot to pull the curtain.

That's funny, but they were probably escorted to the city limits! - The border of the country is like 200+ miles away!!

Plus especially then even now you wouldn't get thrown out of Scotland into England, either you get thrown out the UK or nothing.

      For now at least...

I think the town limits is possible back then. Nowadays they would have been in a global chain hotel and if they did wrong would have simply have been prosecuted.

I buy two maybe three fifths of that whiskey every year ( they last all year due to only drinking this booze once a month or so) have for 15 years or longer discovered it when boozing with this rich woman I used to date her X left a 5K $ worth of fine liquors stocked wet bar when the divorce was done...anywho it's over 50$ a bottle and deserves nothing more than a well constructed 6oz rock glass crammed with ice ,,let the ice do the talking a sip away.
