for those lazy like i was waiting for someone to do this...

    ---------------------------
Remember a year or two ago when Eddie Van Halen emphatically said Van Halen would not go out on tour on a greatest hits package? He said that he was not a nostalgic act. Well, once again, Eddie has to insert foot as the band is trekking across the land in support of the new Van Halen anthology The Best Of Both Worlds. He can argue that there are three new songs on it so it is not just a greatest hits and nowhere does it say greatest hits on the package so therefore one could construe some truth into what he said.

This is the most comprehensive look at the two worlds of Van Halen: The Dave Era and The Sammy Era. They don’t count the Gary Cherone years apparently. Too bad for Gary as the guy who could use the money the most looks like he will have to try to get Nino back on the road with Extreme if he wants out the ‘used to be famous’ musicians soup line. ENOUGH! Back to the CD!

Let’s start with the new songs. “It’s About Time” is the sentiment most Van Halen fans feel as the band has finally woke up from hibernation. The song has been released to rock radio and is not burning up the airwaves due to the fact that it is just not that good of a song. “Learning To See” is slower and a great showcase for Sam’s voice but again, it is not the classic Van Halen that people want. “Up For Breakfast” should have been the single as this song rocks. Eddie and Sammy need to get in the studio and listen to this one over and over to remember where Van Halen came from and where they should be going. This is the best of the new songs hands down.

The rest of the double disc features just about all the songs that have to be there. However, how could they leave off “Mean Street,” “Somebody Get Me A Doctor,” “Ice Cream Man,” “The Full Bug,” Little Guitars” and “Atomic Punk” and include three live DLR era songs sung by Sammy instead? That seems odd and lowers the rating to a “B”.

In the end though, Van Halen did a pretty good job of representing the band’s complex past. Sam and Dave historians will be able to stoke the fires of debate as this CD switches back and forth between the eras proving Sammy had a lot more great songs than Dave fans might remember but Dave’s stuff was still the best.

Pretty wordy review for what could have been summed up with more economy:

Van Hagar's three new songs don't even stand up alongside previous Van Hagar efforts.

This IS just another greatest hits album.

VH are dead in the water creatively. Expect nothing but nostalgia from here on in.

Classic Van Halen is the bomb.
      Scramby eggs and bacon.

I would have preferred two single disc efforts. One all Roth and one all Hagar.

                :D
