I'll give it a shot. He is a Van Halen. The band is named Van Halen. In his mind the band is named after him & Ed, though it's really named after Ed alone. When Dave became the as big or bigger than Ed, Alex knew that was not right and Dave should be slapped down. My take.

You may not be far off in that theory. From my understanding, I thought it was Dave's idea to name the band Van Halen because he thought it sounded cool. Goes to show how secure he was in himself to not want to call the band Roth or something. I don't believe he ever wanted to hog the spotlight. He just wanted a great show.
Another bone to pick. After reading some of these reviews I'm seeing an awful lot of the individual solo spots that seems to be taking up a lot of time. The bass solo has to be at least 5 to 10 minutes. Same with the drum solo. Ed's solo has to be 10 to 15 minutes. Sammy is doing 2 or 3 songs, plus you know he's yapping between them. All this adds up to 30 to 45 minutes of the show. Wasn't that one of Ed's complaints in 1984 that they were onstage by themselves more than they were together?
Dave named Van Halen (it is unique, it stands out, and has a nice ring to it)...that was not Ed or Al's decision. They should have modified the Halen to Hagar along time ago, but didn't. Thats an entirely different thread.
Why is Alex an asshole? Cause he is a man. Rule # 1...all men are assholes, some are just more open about it than others.
And any of you that think that Ed wants Dave back to "steal his spotlight" is fucking insane.
Ed is by far the bigger douchebag of the two...
"Van Halen was one of the most hallelujah, tailgate, backyard, BBQ, arrive four hours early to the gig just for the parking lot bands. And still to this day is. It's an attitude. I think it's a spirit more than anything else is."
What turned me off to Alex' attitude was one of the original MTV interviews when Dave left.....
"Well, what happened was we had a pretty bad toothache for about 12 years & finally got it extracted."
Sour fucking grapes.
Eddie was pretty genuine at the onset of the whole thing:
"I was completely shocked & didn't know what to think. I was so disappointed."
Then it was evident that they started feeding off of each other & believing their own interviews & it spiralled out of freaking control.
Hagar wearing a "Dave Who?" shirt at the shows didn't help matters either....
"Honey, my shirt got itself torn up. My shirt tore itself on that stripper's hand, and I need it to be sewed up for the show."
"No problem, Dave, no problem. Say hello to Fluffy."
"Fuck you, Fluffy."
"No, no, you're going to upset Fluffy."
"I ain't saying hello to no stuffed bear."
"You know, now that I think about it, it's going to take a little longer to sew up that shirt than I was thinking."
"Hi Fluffy, how you been?"
"Now that I'm thinking of it even more, it's going to take half the time, Double D, Diamond Dave! Would you hold Fluffy?"
"N--- yeah."
From day one I've thought Alex was a fuckin twat.......... ever read an interview with the guy? I never have any fuckin clue what the hell he's talkin about.
Oh and someone needs to tell him that you don't need to be hitting a cymbal every goddamned second of a song.
Its just a bunch of white noise man.......... It just kills some very interesting drumming that he does do. But all you can hear is this evil hissssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss ssssss.
As I've said before, I've actually read an interview with Val Bertinelli where she said, Ed STILL has a warm spot for Dave in his heart...She also said she didn't know how Ed could be so "forgiving" of Dave after all the shit he pulled. She said it was the one thing that she and Ed never saw eye to eye in that respect.
I like to pay close attention to the things I'll forget later...
