I've been working with a new crew this week. I was pleased that I was teamed with people who liked to blast some music overhead while working. However, I soon realized that much of the time I was listening to stuff like Toby keith, or if it was rock, it was this modern new millennium rock that I really don't get. It all just sounds like really heavy Pearl Jam to me.
So anyhow, the week goes on, and, being the new guy, I keep my mouth shut. I just go with the flow. Friday afternoon, in the final hours of our week together, a fellow comes in with a cd from his car and puts it in the stereo. I hear the intro to Runnin With The Devil and the whole day changes. The lights are less harsh. The room is cooler and being at work don't seem like the worst place to be anymore. It moves into Eruption and I'm glad to hear that we were sticking with Van Halen. The third song was Ain't Talkin Bout Love. Realizing that this was not the typical running order of VH1, I stood up and called out, "What CD is this?" I was afraid it was one of the Best Of's and I was going to be hearing Hagar later.
The owner of the CD turned to me and said. "Oh, it's just a CD I had a friend of mine make. It's all Van Halen, but only the David Lee Roth stuff, none of that Van Hagar. I don't like that sappy stuff."
As the CD continued through some Van Halen II tracks, it skipped to Diver Down. I was disappointed that it did not include WACF and FW, but after it had gone through 1984 it picked those other two back up, essentially saving much of the best for last.
I spoke to him and talked about the unreleased stuff I have acquired and he didn't seem to be too knowledgable about Van Halen. I reached out a hand, put it on his should and said, "We have much to discuss."
