I ain't no youngblood anymore...44 in December. I personally witnessed some unknown band open the bill and wipe the floor with Ronnie Montrose (on tour with the "Open Fire" instrumental record) and some "who the hell are they" band named "Journey" here in South Florida in 1978.
Honestly, the lead singer's grandmother was in the audience, and he took the time to point her out to the crowd (think about that, the opening band had what, a 28 minute time slot?).
Move ahead, 14- 15 years later. My friends Kev Carter, J. Posey and me are in the Florida Keys, getting set early one morn to go do some diving and fishing.
Same said lead singer strolls by, says simply "Hey, g'morn."
Posey and I immediately knew who we were talking to, yet did not let on.
The four of us wound up spending the next 20 minutes or so talking...fishing.
Dude had to leave, we went our seperate ways.
That made an indelible impression on me, boys and girls.
When I read posts anywhere bashing this fellow, I think about those 2 events. (Also caught the guy performing a few other times, yet these two "meetings" if you will, resonate the loudest.)
I've heard the guy want's to be an E.M.T. IMO, yup makes sense.
For me, I disregard the on stage histrionics...I disregard what other folk interpret this guy stands for.
To me, the fellow carries himself with an air of dignity.
He's trying to get through life, just like you and me. He would like to have fun, if you'd like to also...pull up a chair.
Barry Sanders would score a touch down, and not do some "look at me" voodoo dance. He simply acted like he'd been there before.
That stuff impresses me.
I wish that in the struggle of life, I could meet more Dave Roths.
Christ knows, they are needed...
