Another kinda funny mini-review
I like the James Bond reference, however I would rank sammy as George Lazenby.
CD: The Best of Both Worlds Van Halen (Warner Bros.)
Listen to an excerpt of ‘Panama’
If this were a James Bond movie, would David Lee Roth be Sean Connery with Sammy Hagar as Roger Moore?
The reasoning goes this way: The band was best on its first two discs; Roth, while obnoxious, found the perfect job for him; Hagar has never kept up with Eddie Van Halen’s guitar work – but then, Eddie’s playing has been deteriorating since 1979.
Note that this double CD’s nonchronological sequencing amounts to a dramatic restatement of the band’s strange history. Plug in your amp, boys, and crank that air guitar to 11.]
Here, then, is a take on three A-rated songs:
— “Eruption” – The debut flak-blast that showed what Eddie carried in his pocket. Dang! A+
— “Ain’t Talkin’ ’Bout Love” – The Roth-era signature song. Demonic, propulsive, bitter. A
— “Finish What Ya Started” – Country-funky and cool, plus Hagar’s winningest vocal. A
Bottom line: Roth era: B; Hagar era: C; career: B+.
As for the disc as a whole, mix your favorite era into the iPod and toss the rest.
